Why the low turnout at the CSI US Open One Pocket

I believe for the short time spent on throwing this together, it will be ok. I mean really this is a 6 month notice tournament. So a short notice 5k added tournament is not the worse thing in the world for pool.

BTW there is a large contingency of one pocket in North Jersey, Boston, the game gets played. I can say in NJ though they love triple shimmed or better, and the standard pocket size might have been a small turn off. As someone else said, you can only have so many days off when you have a regular job to play pool.

Mark K's heart is in the right place here. He loves pool and after competing last year in the big straight pool tournament he really hopes to have bigger tournaments at his place. The room is plenty big enough.

Again, anyone who thinks that throwing together a tournament is easy, the stage is yours. This is an industry where instead of working together and trying to get something tangible together, its all one upsmanship and undermining.. this guy don't like that guy, blah blah blah... this guy is charging for this or that, how dare he make money blah blah..

Hopefully you'll be treated to some exciting pool and appreciate the effort that went into a short notice endeavor. I thought any pool was better than no pool.. guess that all depends on who is behind it...

Slight correction, Joe, it was more like two months from announcement to event. Here's the whole genesis: http://www.onepocket.org/forum/showthread.php?t=11073

Personally, I don't think you can go anywhere but up from 16 entries, so sure it will grow wherever it's held if that's the baseline. But in the Midwest, even with two months, I'm pretty sure he could have doubled his starting point. And in the out years, I think the field would be far, far healthier. Theres just a bigger base of 1pocket players and fans here and people can drive in from everywhere.

I agree with you 100% Lou. I understand it was scheduled in CT so it could be piggybacked with the Straight Pool event, and that also explains why it was shorter than usual notice.

I live only 3 hours from Pool Table Magic (host of both events), and know a good many of the One Pocket players here in New England a little bit at least, and as a group (which is weak to begin with lol) we locals did not do a good job of supporting this -- maybe about 3-4 of us at most, and not the strongest players for sure. I don't have an answer for that. For example, Snookers in Providence is our most active tournament room, and I don't think a single regular from Snookers came to the Open :(

One funny thing about New England that is different from the midwest and other places that I have noticed is how spoiled we seem to be about driving any distance to go anywhere. Here in New England apparently 3 hours is considered a very long way, whereas my impression from visiting the midwest and other parts of the country, three hours would be nothing to drive, lol.

def agree. i suppose we take it for granted alot the events that do come up and organize stellar pro fields like Zuglan, Hopkins, Williams, Behrman etc. They make it look easy when it's clearly not.
Kudos to those who try. Tough job being a pool promoter!

Low turnout

As to the original ? - the day session-
it's difficult to say mid week (work) interest in 1p etc. I am not sure about the night session or if there is one. Maybe for the 14.1.
I attended yesterday and what I can say the play was great.
Cory was minus 2 and ran 10 - I watched Shane Run a 100 on a practice table.
Some good talent on the practice tables including Dennis O. and a young gun from chi town who qualified for the 14.1 - will try and get back there today for some 14.1.
The room is great very high ceilings lots of wonderful photos & memorabilia on the walls
Excelent lighting and very nice Brunswick tables that have been re surfaced. Nice bar
and food menu.
If you can make it to the 14.1 should be some fine action and a way to support the
Game..
