refurbishing Gold Crown I pocket castings

Hi there,

I've got the aluminium pocket castings for a Gold Crown I. Is it just a case of using a buffer and compound to polish them up?

I'm just asking, because I notice a lot of people powder coat, or chrome the corner castings when refurbishing a Gold Crown. So, I'm just wondering if the GC I corners get ruined if they're buffed out.

I don't know what they look like new? are they a brushed aluminium finish?

Thanks!

I believe you'll have to lightly sand them first and then use the buffer to polish them. On mine I had them chromed, but on my Aniversairy I first striped them with oven cleaner then used fine grit sand paper followed by the buffer.

You can make them look pretty good just using a simple aluminum polishing kit like this one. The compounds in this kit are not super abrasive so you really won't be able to do much damage. This will buff out light scratches, which are the ones that are mostly responsible for making the aluminum look dull and that may be all you need. My GC1 castings had some deeper scratches so I used the following technique and it worked great. Start with 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper and wet sand. Don't lean on it too hard or you'll start to get a wavy surface. Follow with 800, 1000, 1200, 1500, all wet, and then get out the buffer. Mine shone like a mirror after I was finished and three years later still look good.

Great! I'll give that a shot...Thanks

before you go that heavy, you might try bar keepers friend.

I put some on a towel and was very surprised how much they did to my GC corner castings with only a quick rub by hand.

Thanks....I tried 'mother's' aluminum polish, but it didn't do much of anything. I'll have to sand them to get some of the deeper scratches out

You'll need a powered buffer...if your castings have deep scratches and dings I have a GC1 corner casting that I would sell if you need.
