I now live in Gainesville, VA. I used to live in Arlington and Falls Church. I remember spending a lot of hours at Champions in Shirlington and the old Champions they used to call and also at Hi Cue. The reason I quit pool totally back in 98 was one night, around 2:30am, the Champions at Shirlington was packed and all of the sudden, we heard several gun shots (like 6-7 shots) fired in the room. We were all the way in the back room of the place and close to us was a fire exit that takes you downstairs. We wanted to run and leave the place but had no idea what's going on and fearing if we try to leave we might get shot. One of my buddies said let's get out and used the fire escape exit stairs and another friend said what if they are waiting for us downstairs. Almost all the crowd were lying on the ground as flat as they could in fear of getting hit from the shots. Minutes gone by, we heard all kinds of sirens from the outside. Soon, it looks like the Arlington Police Dept and Sheriff Dept sent everybody to this place. There must have been like 50 or so of them walked in with shotguns and all weapons pointed at everybody and they kept yelling "Dont Move Dont Move!!" They swiftly hancuffed everybody and stayed on the floor and I remember them running out of cuffs and started using the plactic tie cords. At around 3:45, we were all handcuffeds and under control, we were getting interviewed each by someone and proper IDs were asked for documentation. At around 7:30 I remember asking one of the officers that I need to go to work soon and he politely let me know that I'm probably gonna miss my work today. Also my wife is probably worried about me that I'm not home yet. At around 8am, we are finally released from the establishment and when we came out, news tv crews were outside and that's where I over heard from one of the reporters going live that at around 2:30am, one Vietnamese guy tried to rob the place at gunpoint by asking one of the waitresses to empty the cash register. Bad timing for this guy, adjacent to him was a table with two off duty DC cops playing. Shots were fired, the assailant killed on the spot and one of the shots fired from one off duty DC cop ricochet to the other off duty but luckily she survived. I got home around 8:30 and just luckily I caught my wife coming out of the house on her way to her job and she said "Is everything alright? was the pool game that good she jokingly said. I just looked at her and kissed her on the cheek and I said have a safe trip to work and finally I also kissed her tummy and I said "Don't give mama a hard time today, ok!" Yes, she was 7 months on her way that time for our first and only baby who is almost turning 18 years old now. I put my sticks away and never looked back! Well until now and I will tell you guys why some other day Hahaha!
