Why? Who would sell their original shaft ?? You save it, and when it comes time to sell, your cue looks like brand new with a perfectly clean, unused shaft. ... THats what I did..

You would think that. But custom shafts are available pretty often on AZB. I own 5 unattached shafts from custom cuemakers (2 Szamboti, 2 Showman, 1 Schick (bought 2 and sold 1)). All of these shafts were additional shafts made for other cues. The two originals remained with each cue and these were sold off.
All of these shafts remain straight and play great. It is not my experience that a great shaft can be mated with any crappy butt and get a cue that plays the same as a full custom from the cuemaker. But, there are some combinations with older, less expensive butts that play quite acceptably. My league player uses a Showman shaft and an older Joss MW butt. It’s not the same as my Showman cue. But it is darn close. League play is too crowded with too many opportunities for accidents.
