The trend of conceding a match

My response whenever my opponent concedes game ball >> "Whew!"

I THEN proceed to pocket the gimme.

This trend is really stupid. Everyone misses easy balls and it's even worse when someone concedes with 3 balls left! Ridiculous!

I don't like it at all and resent being made to feel like a nit because I stay in the chair till the rack is over. It has gotten to where they start giving balls to themselves like you never have to shoot the last ball. They look at you like " You want me to shoot this"

League match, only the 8 ball left and I scratch....he's got ball in hand but the 8 ball is along the right hand rail a foot and a half away from the pocket.

Seeing that the guy is short and a right handed player, I know he has to stretch to get the cue ball close to the 8...shoot behind his back....or use the bridge. He looks at me and says ' you're really going to make me shoot this!?!?' I told him that I wouldn't give Shane Van Boening that shot....he's going to have to shoot it.

He shoots it and makes it, but I've got to hear it all night long telling everyone....'this guy has no respect! He makes me shoot a ball in hand on the 8!"

Personally I love it....it's great that someone can get so worked up over such a piddly thing. All he showed me was that it's easy to get into his head.

I was glad I made him shoot it....nobody should just expect to get a free ball.

Regarding that dude... It's hardly respect when you're waiting/asking for it. You're supposed to go up, aim, and fire away asif you're not expecting handouts. If someone stops you and concedes, think of it as a gift.. not an expectation.

It's a d-bag move to concede. I used to be that d-bag, but realized it's not a good thing to do. I used to justify it as a time saver, but really I think it was just a give-up move. It doesn't save time, maybe a few seconds. Play out the game.

I would never concede to my opponent with three balls left....

but I have CELEBRATED (like I already won) when I have just three easy balls left ....(good thing I made them) :D

This is the way i feel. I don't feel I'm skilled enough to 'insert my will' if you will but it's just an uncomfortable thing, am I insulting the guy for allowing him finish the game?

Yikes, some pretty heavy talk on the subject. Someone called it a D-bag move!?! I don't think the pros should ever (especially in a match people paid to see. Earl vs Darren recently) be doing this. Outside of that, I simply could care less if my opponent does it.

Assume no one is gonna give you anything, if they do then swipe the ball(s) and go break or take their cash or move on in tourney.

Honestly, I don't really remember if I do in tournament/gambling situations. I don't think I do but I'm sure I have a few times. Playing for fun with a buddy then yeah I do.

I actually make a note NOT to if they are on a BNR and especially a package. I'm not gonna take any gratification from them be it Tourney/Gambling/Funsies.

But, I wouldn't go so far as to blast anyone for doing so.

This is one of the things that particularly annoys me. If I get down to the 8 or 9 ball, don't you touch it. That's my ball to shoot. Don't grab it and put it in the pocket for me. F- you. That's my victory lap. It feels like they're being a sore loser and don't want you to have the satisfaction. They can say "I respect your game enough that you don't have to shoot that." as much as they want; but I don't believe it.

Fine, I don't have to shoot it... but I'm going to. And the game isn't over until I do. Don't start breaking down your cue until the game is over. It feels disrespectful to me.

Pool doesn't have a clock that makes it impossible for the tide to turn like basketball and football. Chess is just weird.

Would a baseball team concede the game with the winning run on third base because the count got to 3-0? Or would the team at bat give up and walk off the field because the count is 0-2?

I'm with the colonel on this one. Shoot the balls in, every one of them. Top pros have missed gimmes with the match in the balance. More than twice.

JC

Nice try but not even on the same planet ,, if it's my game my money I concede a one foot putt if there is Calcutta money I let him shoot it

Again, I'm not for or against it (aside from pros as previously stated) . But, the idea of telling someone F-you because you feel disrespected when all they've done is literally give u the game? I don't get it. I won't get it. If I were gambling or playing a tourney & someone raked after I broke or with 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 balls left, awesome.

I don't have anything to prove to anyone and have zero interest in sticking it to someone. If you're giving me the match, I've proved any point that needs proven. I'm so in your head that you literally believe I can't miss this shot.

Edited to say...

You're worried about them being a poor loser, but, what you've stated here is a pretty awful winner.

Not really. It should be a respectful game. If you're playing a game of Monopoly and someone gets mad and flips the table... is that acceptable? Yeah, you won, but not in a reasonable way.

There's nothing "awful winner" about it. I didn't mean you say literally "F you" and get into a big argument with them.

I'm not a fan of the conceding trend.
Giving, receiving while playing or watching on TV.

But Earl has taken it to another level! Lol

I don't believe flipping over the board in Monopoly could ever be construed as "showing a sign of respect for your opponent" as can the argument be made for conceding a ball(s).

I, personally, don't need a victory lap. I don't need to have a feeling of validation or to be respected. I try to conduct myself in a manner win or lose (doesn't always happen) that would leave someone no choice but to respect me.

My premise is that this is really all much ado about nothing. People have their own things that annoy them. Mine are different than yours and yours aren't wrong. I was trying to get an idea about the rationale for such a really big fuss over something I see as irrelevant.

I think I see the reasoning from many and can appreciate it. I don't agree but it's ya'lls opinion and I respect it.

It seems like the trend of conceding a match at the last ball has been picking up. I don't remember people doing that as often in the past. I'm not too big a fan of it. Aside from the fact that someone could miss a final ball... it seems like it takes away from the glory of really finishing it off. Like your opponent doesn't want you to have the satisfaction of eating the last bite.

I understand ordinarily it's supposed to come from a place of respect, but based on how often it happens now.. I feel like it's also coming from a state of giving up. "Whatever, I give up," which seems a bit disrespectful to me.

Am I alone in this?

I agree with half of your post. The part I do not agree with is in it being disrespectful. While in action it was commonplace for us to " give " our opponent the 9 ball. The exception to this was when playing a truly horrible player that was know to be able to miss any given shot at any given time. As you mentioned, the reason for giving the 9 ball was two-fold. One was as a sign of respect. The other was in an effort to thwart giving your opponent any additional momentum or confidence. Unsure of exactly why but in tournaments I tend to make them shoot it but this doesn't come up that often.
