Darren Appleton as a commentator

I was looking at the World 9-Ball Championship Final and I saw Darren was streaming it with his commentary on Facebook. I was impressed with his insights and how much different (in a better way) too current commentators his style was. Just one observation, he mentioned Jason Shaw so often, I would of assumed they were an item, if I didn't know better. Maybe it's just a modern day pool Bromance!

So guys, is it time for our game to have more current players, providing insights, instead of the dribble dished up as pool commentary on most TV matches?

I like when bonafide pro's provide the commentary. It makes what they are saying have much more clout, imo. I pay more attention. Earl is one of my favorites. I've only heard him a few times behind the mic as a commentator, but its always been a "shut up and listen to him" kind of deal.

Earl is a great commentator...and surprisingly focused on talking about the game at hand, even when the other commentator wants to sideline the discussion to pool politics, etc.

But some of the best commentators are former pros like Billy Incardona and Danny Dileberto.

Some of the free streamers have 2nd-tier commentary but, hey, they can't afford to pay someone's expenses and fees to commentate.

However, one thing I can't overlook: when one pocket commentators can't even bother to keep score! Here's a hi-tech solution: get a pencil and a piece of paper, write the players names on the paper and put a "0" everytime they pocket a ball. If they foul and have to spot a ball, put an "X" through the "0". Isn't technology great?

That's a great idea to have more current players providing commentary.
However, I think the goal is to get streaming of important events in the first place.

It was great initiative on DAZ's part to get a stream up for the World's.

Just note this: it's not imperative for there to be commentators.
I mean, when Zoom streamed the World's last couple of years, there was no one talking.
Just the players playing.
So long as it's a quality stream, it's obvious what's taking place.
Personally, I don't care for the (sometimes) unrelated anecdotes while I'm watching pool.

Earl does a great job doing commentary, as does Scott Frost. Nick Varner is right there with them too. They're my favorites. But, nobody does it better than Billy.
Turningstone is coming up and that's one tournament I have on mute most of the time.

To reply to the One Pocket commentators; Not only can they not keep score, they often forget who has which pocket. "Oh, he'll slice this 10 ball right in along the bottom rail." No he won't. That's his opponent's pocket. This is why you don't work at the hospital or the bank.

Takes alot of moxy to have a speech impediment and do public commentary.

A great player and someone who knows not to stay in his comfort zone, you have to admire that.

It's nice to see the insights of some of the pros as their views are usually very interesting and include things I wouldn't have noticed just by watching the matches.

Billy is one of the best, however Danny often makes comments that sound like he never played a game of one pocket in his life!..That is why he and Billy are always arguing shot selection! ..DD should stick to 14.1 commentating, of which there is almost none..(thank God)

PS..Darren may not have been able to beat Danny (in his prime) but he can give him 8/4 and the break, when it comes to pointing out the best shot options! :sorry:

Darren is very interesting to listen to in interviews or commentary. He's great in TAR Podcast #47, answering a lot of viewer questions and showing drills.

Earl is also a great commentator. His style is to tell you the three options the player has right now and why Earl's choice is best. Here's a sample, from Earl commentating during 2014 NY State 10ball championship. Dechaine v Shaw, Semi Finals.

I've never heard Earl commentate before, this is great, thanks!

Edit: LMAO, at about 20:30 he says he wanted to fight Joe Rogan over something he said once. #deathwish

i dont think the older players provide " dribble" but to hear the younger players perspective would be educational
