Here is the most basic problem with pool today

Right. There are only two pool halls in all of NYC I actually want to go to, and it's because the equipment is top-notch and the environment is decent. One has all Diamond Pro-Ams on the cheap, and the other is older but well kept GCs but with somewhat high table rates. But good serious players at both, so I'll spend whatever I have to to have a good practice environment. But certain nights you can't go play pool anywhere. It's sad really, the one with the Pro-Ams gets overrun with groups of screaming teenagers because it has reasonable prices and is in the ghetto, and the other gets overrun by heavy-drinking late-twenty-something Manhattaites and in both cases the pool halls actually cater to this by cranking the music up.

There's another pool hall I go to from time to time to practice on their snooker table but even during the middle of the day when I am literally the only one there trying to work on my snooker fundamentals, they have R&B cranked so loud I can't even hear myself think, then invariably by even 2 in the afternoon screaming packs of idiots come in and will gather 5 around a table next to me, who are screaming their proto-thoughts at each other constantly, before, during, and after every shot, being as loud as humanly possible. That's why I stick with the other two pool halls, because during the day, there aren't just random packs of idiots everywhere and when the DO wander in while the serious players are there during the day, everyone tells the to STFU and stop damaging the equipment, those people are quickly shown that they're not welcome, just wish management would do some of the booting as well.

I live in nyc and I feel your pain. Steinway and carom are the only two places I go to anymore. Amsterdam after 6pm and society after 4pm can go kiss my ass and their table rates are ridiculous for the cherry on top. Gotham is great but way too far for me even by driving. Stienway or Carom is a 25 min drive with 0 nyc traffic. People who live near a good hall or hell for that matter in places where it's easily feasible to plop a table in their home have it so good.

I'm pretty sure I know of the places you're talking about and would agree.

$25 an hour per person is nuts but it is Manhattan and real estate isn't cheap.

Down South no way!

$25 an hour to play pool!? Of course there is probably lots better work up there and maybe some people can afford that but down South in North Carolina you couldn't get someone to pay $25 a hour to slap someone they hated, much less Pool.

I'm not sure the fact that pool costs money is a reason why interest in pool is declining. Everything costs money.

But...

Pool can be surprisingly expensive. There's a pool hall around the corner from where I live that costs $13 / hour with no exceptions. Now, I play at least 20 hours a week, so if I paid $13 / hour that would cost me $13,000 per year(!).

In fact I have to travel to a hall much further from my place, where I play league (so I get the tables to practice on for free) in order to be able to play pool affordably.

The cost ($13 / hour) is also the reason why there are zero (literally zero) good players at that joint.

Free is good......

People are creatures of habit. This is why leagues are good. Small tournaments are good. Anything that gives people a reason to go there.

When I had my place I would rent the tables real cheap. $4.00 per hour no matter how many players on that table.

people not only showed up to see if there was someone to play but also to socialize because of all the friends they had acquired on the weekends.

Again free is good or real cheap promos.

Just my opinion from someone that's been on both ends........

In the South

In the South $4 and hour isn't all that cheap because of the work situation and people down here revolt at thought of Unions or organizing labor. Most people here will only spend 10 to 12 dollars when the go in the pool room if that because they want to go a few times a week. Real quick a person could be spending $30 a week and $120 to $150 a month. Down here that's a sizeable portion of your take home pay and league players don't seen to have a lot of expendable income.

It comes down to what youre willing to pay. I'm seeing tables move into more homes here. I really wouldn't doubt that people start moving tables into outbuildings to get their buddies a place to hang out.

If you're willing to travel. I would also suggest Raxx. Its a very decent place with good competition and a nice group of regulars.

Montgomery County, Pa. Classic Billiards. $4.75 per hour. Noon to 5 pm $8 seven days a week. 7 pm to closing $8 seven days a week. 16 9 foot GC's 4 9 foot Big Gandys. One heated Gabriels Kronos 3 cushion table. 10 foot snooker table. Action if you want it. All tables in impeccable condition. Best bargain and room around.

So how do we explain the fact that teenagers and other demographic groups are playing pool by
the millions all over the world?
The last I heard, they have internet activities in China, PI, Doha, Europe etc. (sorry for the sarcasm)

The interest in pool has simply spread to other parts of the world.
Pool is NOT dead for crying out loud!
America doesn't hold a patent on pool playing.

In fact, we should all be grateful that pool has expanded as it has.
It is this type of widespread participation that will beget (and is absolutely crucial for) Olympic participation.
[I'm guessing 2024 will be the year--it's all political, folks. Just be patient].

Consider yourselves fortunate as pool players and pool fans.

History suggests otherwise. Billiards was huge in the US for years. It is still viable internationally but you can hardly find a billiard table in the US anymore. And I did not find it comforting to know that there are 160,000 carom tables in S. Korea when I couldn't find one to play on where I lived for 25 years.

Considering the percentage of the commercial pool world that takes place in bars, I cannot imagine how people think kids will be introduced to the game. In NYC, where I grew up, we had after school programs at school and they had a few pool tables and for many kids that is how they got their introduction to the game. And if they had a table in the basement or a friend with one, it was for the kids, not for the stick up his butt dad who wouldn't let kids play on the table, like some of the stories we hear here.
