Let's Make Sure There's a One Pocket Hall of Fame Dinner This Year @ DCC!!

Who was the voting committee?

How do you get nominated?

If you make the most posts about it are you a candidate or do you have to have won something?

Is it like the St.Louis Louie Award where all you have to do is gamble the most and don't even have to come out with the money to win the award?

Louie lost as much money as he ever won, maybe more than he ever won. I don't think he is any Hall of Fame.

Send us a list of the voting members, if there is one.

I'm not sure how the nominations work, how the voting is done or even where this HOF is located.

Correct - Louie is not in any HOF. He was a multiple title winner including the US Open. Louie wouldn't even have been the top one pocket player in St Louis in his time so doubt he will make this HOF that Dick is in. But who knows, if Dick got in, anything is possible.

Did you ever know a guy named "Cotton" Smith (if my memory serves me correctly) from Poplar Bluff, MO? He was white-haired and about 50, or so, when I last saw him in early 70-72 time frame. I'm sure the name "Cotton" had to have come from his hair color. I used to run into him on occasion in SEMO and NE Arkansas.

He was a one-pocket player that liked to travel around and gamble. He wasn't a world champion, but he played good and liked to gamble.

Poplar Bluff is about 3 hours south of me. Any players I know from down there were rotation players.

Cooney spent several months in Phoenix too..but he couldn't quite overcome a drunk 'mediocre' HOF player like moi!..We played
several times, and he did not leave town winner!..(witnesses on demand..Barb for one)..So I say again, whats your point?

PS..Also, you'd be wise to find another example...I know Jack and Barb real well, and they are way too smart to waste that much time in 'deadsville' St Louis, unless theres a rich whale lurking nearby!..He sure ain't gonna be hangin' around the pool hall, BSing with you!

You'd be wise to call the people you 'know real well' before posting so you don't sound so stupid.

You'd be wise to call the people you 'know real well' before posting so you don't sound so stupid.

Only a guy whos never won anything in his entire meager existence, would call someone else stupid!..Tell me what it is
I've said that you are doubting!..Be specific, because I'm sure there could be a wager involved!

PS..Trolling would be a lot more enjoyable for you, if at least occasionally, you "knew real well" what you were talking about!..When your buddy, Mr.Eye trolls, he at least makes an effort to sound intelligent! ;)

You may be correct, it was about 40 years or more ago when I first heard it or read it somewhere.

There was so much shit being talked back then, by Fats, that you never knew if anything he said was factual.

Anyway, I met Jack White and he claims Fats wouldn't play him and that I heard from his mouth.

Thanks for the input. Now I'll have to find some of those old books. I don't have them any more.

It may be in "The Bank Shot and Other Great Robberies".

It was in "The Bank Shot" but it was also referenced in R.A. Dyer's book;

One-Pocket Mystery: Who Invented the Game?

Fats identifies "Jack Hill" as the inventor of one-pocket. Here's a one-pocket mystery.

Jack Hill, apparently from Oklahoma, is referenced in Hustler Days as the inventor of one-pocket. But the original source for that information was The Bank Shot and Other Great Robberies, the book by Minnesota Fats. Fats offers only a few details about Hill, and we have never seen Hill's name referenced elsewhere.

According to Fats, a man by the name of Babe Emmett owned a great room in downtown Oklahoma City, on Main Street. Fats first went there, looking for Hill, but to no avail. The locals told him that instead, Hill would be playing in a room at the Huckin's Hotel, down the street.

"I must have stayed at the Huckin's Hotel for six months, watching old man Hill playing one-pocket," Fats states in the Bank Shot. "He told me if I could play three cushion and banks and straight pool, I would have a tremendous advantage at one-pocket so we played some three cushion and banks and once he saw the way I could bank a shot he said I wouldn't have any trouble at all."

So who was Jack Hill? And was he really the father of the most cerebral of hustlers' games?

A difficulty here is that a separate man, a hustler named Hayden Lingo, also has been credited with inventing one-pocket. Lingo is also from Oklahoma.

"Old-timers from Oklahoma City describe him as a well-dressed and soft-spoken man, while those who ran into him on the road often describe him as a secretive hustler. From Eddie Taylor to Squirrel, to Freddie the Beard, all who knew him agree that he was an unusually smart player, who approached One Pocket like a studious chess master would approach chess."

So that brings us back to Jack Hill, who is referenced in the Bank Shot. That book was actually written by Philadelphia journalist Tom Fox, and it was based on his conversations with Fats and his then-wife Evelyn. But there wasn't a lot of fact-checking going on when Fox wrote the book, and Fats was known for playing extremely fast and loose with the truth.

Could it be that Fats simply forgot Lingo's name and so made up that of "Hill" instead? That is, could it be that Lingo and Hill are the same person? After all, they're both from Oklahoma City. Or could it be that Hayden Lingo learned the game from Jack Hill?

I tend to think the second supposition is the more likely. That's because Fats, in his book, described Hill as "an old man." Given the timeline from the Bank Shot, that means that Lingo would have been either dead or positively ancient by the time of the Johnston City tournaments. That doesn't quite square with the description of Hayden Lingo that we've seen.

But Fats, Tom Fox and Hayden Lingo and are all dead. And so too, presumably, is Jack Hill. So it seems impossible to do more than speculate.

Dear Butt-in Breath!

Please do not butt in with your meaningless trivia, when I am busy making a fool out of Watchez!..He may miss my post, and I would lose out on the $1000 he would want to bet! :sorry:

PS..Send me $500, and we'll call it square! (cash only please)

PPS..Please ignore the fact that 'Whiner Watchez' would not bet 50 cents, two pit bulls could whip a chihuahua !

Don't get me involved, I never called anybody "stupid".

I don't troll anything. I don't fish, nor have a trolling motor. I buy my fish at the fish market.

I'm not anybody's buddy. I say what I think and think what I say. If somebody agrees with me, it doesn't make them my buddy. Or, if I agree with something that someone else posts, it doesn't make me their buddy.

I have never met anybody in person who comes on here, except 3 or 4 people from Hawaii.

Poplar Bluff is about 3 hours south of me. Any players I know from down there were rotation players.

There was another old guy called "Blackie" that used to roam around SEMO in the late 60s/early 70s who used to play one-pocket. I can't remember what he looked like, but I never saw him play. I'm sure he was from MO. Probably a lot of people with that nickname, too. Did you ever run into anybody named Blackie from that era.

Mr.Eye, must you take everything I say so literally?..It does not speak well for your IQ level, that you have not yet figured out that most of my idle chatter, is 'tongue-in-cheek'? (except of course, when I am calling Watchez 'stupid') ;)

PS..The definition of both 'trolling' and 'stupid', (in Webster's dictionary) is accompanied by picture of Watchez!..Are you trying to get your photo next to the word, 'dense'?

O.k., so I try to stay out of this stuff, but I would like Lou back.

It seems to me that there is a population online that cherishes unnecessary conflict and a lack of civility. I do not want to participate in that...ever.

The fact is, 1pocket.org, without Lou and San Jose Dick, is a much less interesting place. I believe both, Lou and San Joes Dick have a lot to offer by way of stories and knowledge. I do wish they would spend more time passing on their knowledge, good ideas, and fun stories and less time in conflict. It is easy for a lot of us to think that valuable communication can be done some other day, but none of us are guaranteed tomorrow.

From my perspective, Steve has made a mistake in banning them.

Thanks, Dave.

I got ya. I have everybody figured out. :)

Your "tongue in cheek" comment reminds me of the old "Skoal" commercials. I'll give you a new nickname..."Skoal". Just a little pinch between your cheek and gum will do you.

I'm glad I never picked up chewing that nasty shit.

For those that think the Jimmy Mataya video is dumber than hell, check out this one with the guy talking about Skoal.

With all due respect, if it wasn't for that website and Steve, you would not be in the One Pocket Hall of Fame. It is because of his efforts that there is one that exists.

You should drop this topic. I understand you miss being over there.

I remember when you were inducted in the Hall of Fame. You could not make it because of health reasons. People came to you and wished you well and gave you praise in your absence.

If there was not that One Pocket Hall of Fame, I would have not heard of you before, though Keith says knows who you are. I realize you were probably working 9-to-5 job when I was more involved in pool pre-Keith. :)

JAM, so you're going to the HOF dinner in 2018 (been a long time since you've been to the DCC) and you're wringing your hands a lot about respect when the only one being disrespectful is Steve. lol, if I didn't know better I'd say you been given "the office" that "the fix was in" and Keith was going to get voted into the HOF in 2018.

Either that or no one really heard of him but a select few. It's like putting a 15 year backup QB in the NFL hall of fame. He was maybe seen but definitely not heard from.

watchez, when I moved to STL and began playing pool again, no one here appeared to know what a Ginacue was. And even though I'd lived and played on both coasts I'd never heard of a Freddy the Beard, Artie Bodendorfer, and other than Louie, no one from STL.

Meanwhile, there was a whole crew of guys on both coasts that you probably wouldn't have heard of either, that played lights out. IOWs, back before the inter web, pool players tended to be pretty provincial and thought their pond was the biggest and baddest of oceans. As a teenager in San Francisco hanging out at The Palace and Cochran's, I'd heard of SJD, along with Cole, and Searcy, Barber, Junior, Filipino Gene, Annigoni, and many more.

He was voted in to the HOF by a knowledgable membership of 1pocket players. He's earned his due.

Ardel " Blackie" Leseur. Not sure if I spelled it correctly.

Damn! You have done the impossible. I would have never guessed there were any pictures of Cotton around, save for those taken by his family somewhere.

The last time I saw him was over 40-something years ago. He used to stop in the pool hall where I worked as a kid.

Thank you for posting that. :) :)

The reason 1pocket is becoming more and more popular is because pool players can now see and learn the shots on streams, DVDs, at tournaments and more and more at their local rooms. Back in the day, it used to be much more of a "dark art."

There is also the fact that, just as rotation players are migrating towards 10ball and even American Rotation, from 9ball, they are all migrating to 1pocket because they are becoming more sophisticated players. Decades ago the popular wines of choice were Annie Green Springs and Blue Nun. Now people have developed palates and can appreciate finer wines, just as beer drinkers are leaving their Pabst Blue Ribbon and Bud for craft beers.

It's also a game you can handicap with a high degree of precision, so if you (gasp) gamble, it's a fabulous game for those purposes.

Lastly, when you outgrow 9ball -- which is almost literally "paint-by-numbers" -- you will find that 1pocket provides a blank canvas and an unlimited choice of colors to work with, express yourself and create. No other pool game comes close as far as letting the player be an artiste.
