I tried a few shots in this position, none I could make

Tried first driving the white ball up table to the corner to maybe come back, making my carom off the long rail

Then tried going off the red with soft speed but was very hard surprisingly to judge how much ball to hit without going past the white ball

None I made after several attempts

I think you have to use left draw off red and the short rail to land softly on white. Drive red along the short rail. Play to drive white on the following shot.

That's one I stayed away from to not drive the red ball out of the corner

As I felt the amount i would have to hit the red would have taken it away,

I will give it a shot with your suggestion

You need such a damn soft touch for this game

Very hard to develop when you grow up playing pool never knowing of carom until after 30 :(

Few more here

Your yellow here

Long rail is to its back
Can you make a gather shot from here?
White up and down back to red drawing yellow to the corner?

Is it possible?

I feel like it's too far in the middle of the white

Yellow again

It and white are along the short rail

Again can you regather them in the corner from this position in one shot?

Wonder if this thread will see as much discussion, doubtful

Hoppe says if you think straight rail is easy, try and run 50 and you'll find out how easy it is!

Unless your from Belgium or France or the Netherlands of course

This applies only to the first shot.

For the first shot I think if you piquet the dotted ball from the cue ball and used left you can gather, but the shot has to be hit a little hard. I think from the angle of the photo if you drew the dotted ball from the cue ball you can make the point but cue ball will not gather so nicely and probably the cue ball would be close to the middle of the foot rail. It would be a piquet not all the way vertical, but closer to 45 degrees.

Hope this helps. Keep practicing straight rail and don't get too frustrated.

You imply that the short rail is to the right in this picture, but when you say "up and down" that implies to me that the long rail is to the right. If you plan to draw from yellow to red you can remove speed from the cue ball by elevating. I'm pretty sure both Hoppe and Daly discuss this and you see balkline players do it all the time.

One possible option is to play thin from red to yellow and leave yourself closer to yellow. Another is to play soft left draw on the left side of red and play for the double kiss. That takes some practice. Another possibility depending on the exact angle from white to yellow is to drive yellow twice across and back.

But it is a bad idea in general at straight rail to gather the balls exactly in the corner because you are allowed only two shots there.

OK see i don't even know the correct lingo Lol

Yes short rail to the right, by up down I meant shoot into the white and make it go into the rail and bring it back close to the others

I did not even think about elevating the cue, like you have said
I have seen it in balkline, it just didn't come into my head to try that

And 1 can easily be driven out of the corner easily enough

This is not always the rule though, as I seen in a Spanish video, I posted it here of 2 guys running 400 each in their match, and they shot more than 2 in the corner, didn't have the table even marked there

I always see the corner lines though in belgium France etc etc
they are so proficient at it there

And even though the corner rule is there
I wonder how many could actually crotch the balls for hundreds and hundreds of points These days

Seems like a test in mental fortitude to keep your focus over that amount of time doing the mundane task of keeping them there

Might simply be my ignorance , maybe it's just my lack of skill

But one can make the argument that straight rail is tougher than 3c for us Americans

Were used to hitting the balls hard, making it go across the table

Straight rail, the speed control is of upmost significance
And really really hard to get a hold on

3c you can run the ball around with speed, not saying its easy at all

But do you get what I'm trying to spit out?

Others I have spoken to do agree, and I've seen some state similar here
The small games are deceptively difficult
