My pool table journey!

Hello, not sure if this is the place to post this but I will use this to post and update my journey into getting a pool table for my living room. I bought this on 11/26 from a wonderful lady in NJ and finally got it home today on 12/3. It was a bear! My father in law, brother in law and I did the move. We had a huge problem when leaving the house bc my brother in law's dodge van (which was old) suffered a broken axle or something like that on the way out of the driveway (They only had the wooden bed and legs. I had the slates in my odyssey). Thank god it didn't happen on the highway.

Anyways for my first post in this journey, I wanted to share the following two pics:




I believe the slate is 7/8 inch each and if I am not mistaken about 150 lbs each. Can someone confirm that for me? It is about 51 inch by 32 inch each.

My next goal is to clean and refinish the wood so it looks new and glossy!

I got tournament blue simonis and the rail and bed DVD videos to help me set the cloth right. I will keep this thread updated as to my progress.

And this is the set of rails. I just cleaned and lightly sanded them for staining and polyuing. Obviously the rail with the name plate is an end rail. But I didn't realize initially that there was a matching end rail. Took me a second to realize which it is LOL. Corner pockets cut differently than side pockets.



Anyways I blacked out the nameplate. Aside from Trent from Toledo, any guesses what this table might be?!?!

HAHA you have no idea how funny that is bc my wife is constantly complaining about the kids toys and now MY toy!! I promise her this is a work in progress and when it is done (I will rearrange everything) she will love the look and layout. Actually the table is for me and my 8 year old!!

Yep we will move that around. For the record, I should have clearance all around except for a certain corner which I got a shorty cue for. Gotta make sacrifices. This is better than no table:grin:

My dad will be gone 48 years this Christmas Eve. I'd give anything to shoot just one rack with him.

Omg Bob reading your post almost makes me teary eyed! Ive given up playing pool when i got married and am now doing this for my two girls actually. One is 8 and the other is four. The 8yo is getting pretty good at ping pong and thats what led us into getting this table. Thanks for your well wishes and im sure your dad is playing pool up there!
 
I thought you said the table was going to be in your living room, according to the pictures it looks like its in your kitchen. Apparently you have been spending so much time with your new table you are getting a little behind doing the dishes.

Haha lol. I know right! That kitchen belongs to my girls and they are well behind! Maybe I should get them a dishwasher with that pink kitchen!:grin:
 
Alright I got the frame/cabinet set up and leveled as well as I could. I did have to shim two of the legs. By doing this I was hoping to made leveling the slate easier and I was right, I think. I did have to use two wooden shims and the slates were literally lined up to the point where you couldn't feel the seams.

I didn't use superglue (so please don't crucify me LOL). Just went ahead and bondoed it. Got a little carried away in that one spot but will lightly sand it.



Tuesday will be simonis 860 video time!

I see you have your note board set up by the table. Good way to keep track of what needs to be done yet. :thumbup:

Okay last night I spent a few hours watching the video and covering the felt. Here is what it looks like:


For my first time I thought it was pretty good! The DVD was great! There was a little more shadowing/wrinkle by the anchor side pocket before I stretched the end. I was wondering if that was bc of the 13/16 in vs 5/8 in. Anyone want to chime in why the difference there?

Regardless, you have to look hard to see a little if at all wrinkling on that anchor side pocket. I still need to do the rails tonight and also install a pool light which will probably be 2 flood lights!

Looks like a nice job especially for your first time. I do not have the courage to attempt this so, instead, I keep the experts employed.

Thanks! Wasnt too bad bc im pretty handy and had help. The simonis DVD was great. Only complaint
is that the volume was too low.

I know it sounds cliche but I really enjoyed doing it!

I had a blast restoring my Brunswick Viscount. But wanted the rails and cloth done right, so I hired a pro. I'm more into the artistic expression and I haven't seen another steampunk pool table around except mine. Enjoy your table and especially the time with your kids.

I have a good friend who is seventy eight years young and he decided he now wants to learn the game. I've been spending twenty hours a week teaching him. I guess he could be considered a son to me :)

The difference in the slack in the second side pocket being less is because you get a little less end to end stretch from the side pocket to the corner pockets because you're also stretching across the table at the same time.

Tell me about it! When I was in college I played a lot of pool. More than I care to admit. Didn't help that I worked at the college pool hall so I get to play for free lol!

And here is the completed product. This is an older Connelly. I think it is a catalina but might be wrong. This pic is from last night. I still need to rework some of the pockets as they are not as snug to the rails as they should be. Also I am going to work on getting some flood lights done today. Got the romex. Just need the lights and switch and Im good to go!
