OB or should I say SP

I've been saying here for a while that OB quality has been falling fast.

But every time I say it I get criticized harshly for doing so.

How dare you criticize one of the few left American production cue makers etc etc.

I see you have been on here for 5 years now. You should know by now that this is par for az. By the way ...dont even think of saying something negative about certain custom makers cause all hell will.break loose then. :D

or, the reverse. don't say anything nice about Meucci, or you are toast.

i certainly hope this doesn't carry over into their shafts. fortunately i got all of my stuff back when Royce was still back around.

I bought the pro lift jump cue, hopefully it's not a perry lift!

Way I read this story, it wasn't JUST about the quality of the product, which, yes, affects us the most.
But also about how they treated this employee as well.
As someone else said, several Facebook posts have been made about the story being 100% true.

That very well could be the funniest thing I've ever read here, certainly the most witty.

Isnt OP's story just the typical American way of doing things when a company changes hands.
I was a DJ for 30 years, same story there with gear. The cliche is you get these boutique to mid size companies that produce exquisite gear, cutting edge tech, bullet proof, intuitive to use, then they either sell or switch production to China to save money and it all goes to $#!+.. Mackie is a great example of that. One company that has withstood the temptation is Rane. -Z-

Yep, the Chinese have a "golden finger". My wife worked for Fellowes, the company that makes Banker Boxes and Paper Shredders.

They were doing great, the shredders were state of the art, sales were great. And then someone had the great idea to move production overseas. WOW.

Disaster from the start. They were switching out the quality parts for cheaper parts and pocketing the difference. When the warranty dept was being blown up with all the returned shredders, they sent folks to China to find out what's up.

They knew they were using inferior parts, so they went there and told them NOT TO DO THAT. They still did it.

Then they finally had to find a quality control guy at the company that was willing to move to China to oversee all production of the shredders. But this fiasco was over 2 years in the works. And countless customers were LOST forever because of it. Many folks lost their jobs because of the reduced sales globally. They really took it on the chin when they had a nice smaller company, that just made great products.

Not until he arrived did it finally get better, but they still tried every trick in the book to cheat whenever he was not "looking". He would have to come in early, or surprise visits on nights and weekends.

Of course, this does not mean all Chinese companies are bad, but shows the lengths to what many of them will do to pocket more money for themselves.

Shame, Shame, Shame. Sorry about the way things worked out PHJ

Most here know this has allot to do with allot of the way things are today and in reality for many years. Build a solid brand with quality materials, employees and workers, then....bring in the cheap labor and inferior materials that 'look' similar to the novice and increase margins.

Or like most, just take production to China to replicate & pump out in their high tech production mills and import back to USA for Distribution.

I wondered what would transpire when Royce Passed. I would like to hear from Shane regarding OB's 'new' and improved line of Cues.

Have a good day,

-Kat,

As an OB customer, I would like to hear the other side of the story. OP may have a legitimate gripe or could just be singing the sour grapes chorus for all we know.

I'm surprised we haven't heard their side of the story yet. Hmmmmm.

Maybe abandoning the straight line core/centralized balancing system isn't that bad of a thing. Within the past few years I've tried 3 different ob cues with the SLC (all black wrapless, curly maple with wrap, and coco sneaky pete)and with the maple cues, I found the stiffness to be uncomfortable and the cues awkwardly balanced. The sneaky pete played well and I used it for a while. The best OB cues of all were the older ones where joss built the butts imo

I'd like to hear the other side of this as well. I've been peeking in on this thread and saw Shane was logged in and on the main forum just a little while ago. I really would like to hear the other side, but the complete lack of any sort of response to this is telling, imo.

If you go to the OB website all the cues in the new product section use SLC construction.

So, if this story is true and they are making Dale Perry Junk butts there will be a lot of explaining why the web site does not reflect the change.

I know he's just a single family operation and not a "company" so to speak; but I wonder what John Barton would have to say. I'd imagine he's got some pretty good insight into the quality of work done in China and such. (And - I'd have to think he thinks pretty highly of their work ethic.)
