It appears that even more so than with regular 8-ball, making too many of your balls and not getting out is an even bigger disadvantage -- and from watching Alex's match, it meant certain death for his opponent.

Alex "helped" his opponent by using combinations and billiards to sink his opponents balls and force him to open up the balls and when they are open Alex as a high enough gear to get out. Very interesting video.
