Tip Fly Off

I’m sure we’ve all experienced a tip flying off when breaking. It happened last night and I was told that since my ferrule is phenolic like the tip, I could shave off and shape the ferrule!!

Anyone ever hear of this?

True, but I had a phenolic tip and guess I don’t break that hard. Dunno why it flew off.

Canvas and linen based phenolics aren’t harder than the cueball. The glass epoxy versions are. G10 is a nay nay. Otherwise, ok.

I can't disagree with previous threads that had pictorial evidence, or my own experience.

A durometer may support your claim, but reality supports mine.

Phenolic tips are attached like a ferrule. I don't think they fly off like glued on tips do.

My break cue came with a phenolic ferrule and tip. They were one piece. I hated the sound of the phenolic so I had my cue guy cut (shear?) the tip off and replace it with a leather tip. No problem. Hope this answers your question.

Pure phenolic. Lots of break cues now come with the two piece solution. And if you use the correct glue, they don’t pop off. I like canvas based phenolic as break tips. The linen can chip at the edges due to the finer weave.

Gawdamn science and the engineers and stuff!

I use professional grade Loctite superglue, scuff both surfaces well and hold tightly for a few minutes. I never had one pop off.
