1 cushion billiards

Oh My Gosh..........

Tried watching the video and fell asleep...........B O R I N G...... add 2 more cushions for some excitement.

One hundred years ago, there were guys running hundreds (even thousands!) playing Straight Rail billiards! They would get the two balls together and "nurse" them along the rail, making billiard after billiard! Or lock them up in a corner and do the same thing. That is why Balkline billiards came into effect to make the game more difficult. Someone like Bob Jewett might offer a better explanation than me.

Yes the game tends to be for people who can sit still for more than 5 seconds

The people that see the beauty in the ridiculous talent needed to play this game at the level displayed by the late and great Rafael Garcia

Jay there still are people in Europe, Vietnam , south America, korea
Even here in America that can easily run hundred at straight rail, they'd get thousands maybe if the games where that long anymore

Here is a video showing to top Spanish player's both running 400 from the break, onca big table

It's considered easy in Europe to do
Once you have them gathered, which is the hard/fun part of straight rail

This is a great game and I'm completely on board with it now that I know the patterns and strategy... and relentless demand for constant thought. Not found in pool except for one pocket.

Once you dig in you'll see the beauty

You'll find quick, that the speed of hit, the energy transfer is critical, absolutely critical to get the right action to move the cue ball, and properly place the second ball

It's fantastic, an exquisite fine art

Yes there's 47.2 71.2 and 47.1 balkline
Again still played in Europe at very high level

You can see several modern balkline matches in my channel
And I have a balkline thread in the Carom section with many matches as well

All carom games are still played at high levels

Why not just take on the harder challenge of 3 cushion which is more difficult but all the more rewarding.
IMO, it really seems akin to playing pool on a 7' bar box instead of a 9 ft table, i.e., it's an easier game.
It does provide a excellent beginner's approach to learning how to play and master 3 cushion billiards.

well now heres where you can learn something

take a seat

first of all, 3c isnt as reward to everyone, i dont really like wackin the balls around the table as much as i do 1cushion and balkline

i garuntee you that 3c is much easier to take to than these so called "easy" games for pool players

garuntee, cause pool players already kick and have patterns going through there head

where pool players will absolutely struggle more is in this EASY game of 1 cushion, balkline or even the easiest of them all straight rail

do me a favor, next time you drag your behind to a carom table, give it 10 shots

just ten

play straight rail, and you just try and put those 3 balls together where you can score easy points while KEEPING them together

try that and get back to me on whats easy

and no one masters 3 cushion, no one

why dont you pool playes who master 9 ball 8 ball take on hard more challenging game of 14.1,
you pool players keep making quicker easier games, carom went the other way but still its so called EASIER games are still far more difficult and challenging with break and run outs, very far and few in between

moving the balls around in the classic games, do far more for a pool game than 3 cushion
you already kick at balls in pool games

It takes a little getting used to the satisfaction of balls colliding as opposed to balls disappearing into pockets. There is not present the wham-pow-whallop in carom that there is in pool, and like most foreign things, doesnt't capture your attention like the familiar does at first glance.

One cushion is hard. Very hard. The closest metaphor for it in pool lingo is it is like playing one pocket against yourself. Every shot demands that you control three ball positions at once. Because no balls disappear, it also demands that your mental simulation of ball paths also be "on". This is an incredibly valuable exercise for all cue sports (including pool). One cushion is also the foundation of 3c, and is how you get good at that game too.

Three cushion is also amazing, with different challenges (metaphorically nine-ball of carom land). Both are brilliant games.

The silence in company of a warm glowing table, broken by the quiet clicks of balls and a dram of Islay scotch. A beautiful hobby.
