Roll-out ( 2 fouls, ball in hand )

So player A pushes out and player B takes shot plays a safe player A pushes out Player B makes a good hit sticks player A again , what happens then ,

Player A cannot push out two shots in a row. Remember he was already on one foul. If he "accidentally" pushed out again, it would be two fouls in a row and his opponent would get BIH anywhere on the table.

We always played where both fouls had to be back-to-back shots. In other words, if player A pushes and B takes the shot, A's foul is wiped clean. Player A would have to foul on two consecutive shots( the push and the following shot) for B to get BIH. I think this is what onestroke was referring to.

How is the first pushout not counted unless its off the break

In a nutshell , player A has pushed out 2 times player B took both shots has player A stuck safe , what is player As option now if he makes a bad hit then what

If I understand your Q correctly, you need to understand, to get ball in hand, there has to be two *consecutive* fouls. If A pushes out, B takes shot and hooks A, A can push again, no 2nd foul. If A pushes again, B gives up shot and A fouls on his attempt, B get B i H.

Huh?? Try this: you shoot, miss and hook me. I push out.(Foul 1). You let me shoot and i foul again. That's foul 2 and you get BIH. If you had taken the shot instead of passing it back, that would have erased my foul. For there to be BIH, there has to be two fouls in consecutive shots(not turns) by same player. That's how we always played 9ball.

In the roll-out days, I would ONLY play two fouls by the same player.
...so, if my opponent rolled out, I could push back....
...or if I shot and hooked him after his roll-out, he better hit it or I get cue ball in hand.
...that way, the onus always stayed on the first guy who pushed...just, IMO

Got it ,, Id be real interested to see this with todays great safe players the ones who can stick and also make good hits when need be , I don't really think its as big of a advantage to the best shot maker that's it is being portrayed to be , players of that error didn't have that game and jump cues , its also only a fraction of games its a break n run contest now so its even more less relevant

We never used this variation. If the incoming player accepts the shot it erases the push. We didn't allow back-to-back pushes. To get BIH, there had to be fouls on two straight shots by same player(the push and the next shot).

The shotmaker has more leeway in pushout. He/she can be more offensive knowing that they can push if hooked. The game is designed for shooting and offense. Plus, all balls spot AND there's that pesky spot-shot. Simple shot in theory but under heat that pocket can look TINY.

Yeah... What Gar said.

( Which is what I thought **I** said! )

I hear ya but I still don't see this overwhelming favorite to the better shot maker good safe players today are far far better than the days of pushout

We didn't either. No push to a push. Either shoot or give it back. But, there very variations. But someone earlier said something about East vs West and so on. But let me be very clear on this. Until 1 foul started in the very early 80s EVERYONE played roll out. And ALWAYS HAD. There was no 1 foul. Didn't exist. And RO was RO, regardless if you were in Bakersfield, Honolulu, or Patterson NJ. NO ONE PLAYED ONE FOUL. Period. And they weren't 'gaff" rules thought up by a few drunks in a bar. They were THE rules. And if you didn't like 'em, someone would've told you "Then go play badminton or volleyball."

Ya and no one had the safe game of today's players either it's rare a good safe player gives up any shot he shoots safe again it's one pocket 9 ball , if he's a run out player with those skills and there are many , it's simply not this big advantage it's being made out to be to the better shot maker as it was before, now the better player who has those skills in his arsenal in today's world then yes , but he's a farvoit anyway

Yeah, but that "great safe player" better be able to shoot because he ain't getting BIH unless what i just explained happens. You actually think today's players are better than Buddy, Keith, Cole Dickson just to name a few? I'll take pushout over the current duck/kick/jump game. Its not coming back i know and the game is worse off for it. Just my $.02, nothin else.

The way I see it, why should a player be able to take a foul and put ME under the gun?
...he can push to his favorite tough shot, which may not be mine...
...I should have the same opportunity.
...and if I shoot and hook him, he put himself under the gun by pushing in the first place.

Two fouls by the same player can create interesting situations....
...in Detroit, in the Rack action days...hill-hill for 5 Gs...8-ball froze on the long rail, a diamond
from the corner pocket...9-ball was on the middle of the far end rail....
..the cue ball was almost froze on the same long rail as the 8-ball...about a half-diamond
on the same long rail as the 8-ball...by the end rail where the 9 was.

The pocket he had to play the 8 into was famous for spitting out the ball...( home-
made shim from a truck tire)...guy studies it and taps the cue ball...his opponent
elects to shoot...then stops...taps it back....the guy on one foul shoots it in and draws
back to get good on the nine....wins the set.

He knew I was betting on him, so later on, having coffee, he explained to me why
he pushed...he knew the pocket might spit out...he didn't want to shoot with that
nagging him...if the other guy pushes back, he has no choice but to go for it...
...so his mind was clear.

Biggest diff I see is, one foul, most players get a somewhat "tough" shot, they duck. Today, that's viewed as superior play. Back in the day, it would've been viewed as cowardly. But then, it never would've happened back then, cause there WAS no "ducking".
