The end of pool on TV?

You call John Daly a successful golfer? What has he ever won really? Okay, long drive competitions in which his size more likely than not played to his advantage. ;) Babe Ruth, while uglier than a man's ass, was not (for the era) what you'd call fat nor out-of-shape.

And what 30 other golfers are you referring to? How successful were they? Bowlers??? Look at the past champions and you'll see that the bigger majority of them had normal builds...some even wiry.

I absolutely stand by my opinion that pool should not be considered a sport, nor bowling, nor golf, and many other games that utilize a ball of some kind. Just because a ball (or balls) are used doesn't qualify it as a sport. Last I checked Jacks was just a game.

Go ahead and compare your examples to football, basketball, baseball, hockey players, Olympic athletes and the like and see how they'd fare in a real athletic contest.

Hell...you probably think Curling is a sport! :D

Maniac (can a man have an opinion???)

Bash Daly all you want, but the fact is, you know who he is. Ask anybody walking down the street who Shane or Efren is and you're gonna get a blank stare. Hell, most pool players don't know who they are.

Btw, Daly won a few big tournaments and has made a good living his whole life off of golf.

My dear Maniac, none other than the esteemed Jack Nicklaus was a chubby overweight young man when he took over professional golf. He never really slimmed down throughout his career. I wouldn't exactly call him a specimen of good health, although his weight and girth never seemed to bother his golf game. There are many other good golfers who were also portly in shape. John Daly won the PGA Championship and the British Open, both Majors! Golf, like Pool, is all about hand-eye co-ordination and I would agree with you that you don't have to be physically robust to do it well.

Pool is definitely a fringe Sport. We need to find what this fringe has to offer and sell it.

I tried by posting Chris Melling's amazing 8 ball B&R on a couple of car guy websites I visit. I mean, if that can't generate some interest, what can? This on their "off topic" sections.

Guess what? Zero response on one board, and a flaming response on the other.

We all know that you never see any cue sports on TV in the US. But the fact that pool will NOT be shown on the major networks was driven home a week or so ago: for two consecutive nights the collegiate cornhole...yes corn-effing-hole...was on ESPN.

Any hot coeds? Sounds interesting.

Jack Nicklaus was chubby? Hmm. Don’t recall that. He was actually one of the more “in shape” golfers for the 70s and 80s. You may want to check out some photos of him when he was younger. Or even middle aged. No gut. No flab. Built like a young Sean Connery.

The first 3 -5 years he played his nickname was 'Fat Jack'- He won majors like that.

Then he did the gym health thing and became fit as a fiddle. You rarely see a guy take weight off and keep it off for 20 years but Jack did it. I was a 2 handicap at 16 and followed golf closely for a few decades.

Right. But Jay said he never slimmed down for his entire career. This wasn’t the case. Even as a senior golfer, Jack was in very good shape in his later years. I would say that Jack was in excellent health for the vast majority of his playing career.

The problem with pool isn't that the pro ranks have too many (or not enough) fatties. The problem is that there is no professional players' association and the governing body is MIA.

Non-major sports could be screwed by this decision when it comes to television, though, as ESPN will quickly learn that shows focused on gambling will get great ratings with almost no production costs.

You must not have seen how he looks lately. He was never fit as a fiddle! And he was never slim at any time in his career!

Stick to pool, Jay. I’ve attended pro golf tournaments. I’ve seen Jack in person. He was hardly “chubby” or “fat”.
