Watch Guys: suggestions needed...

Citizen watches are really nice and some of my favorites. Here are a few that are on my short list...especially the LUM TEC and they are made in the US and have sapphire glass.

GShock Mudmaster (sapphire face, solar and perpetual calendar) $450-$800
GShock Rangemaster (solar and perpetual calendar) $200
LUM TEC watches (especially B38 GMT, sapphire glass) $450 and up
Citizen with atomic time $300 and up (solar and perpetual calendar)

I have a Tag, Tudor, and Oris. I love the Oris, and probably wear it the most. I'd third the Oris recommendation in this thread. They have plenty of watches in your price range, and I also think they are styled very nicely.

I wouldn't suggest a used watch as a gift, especially if the giver and recipient are relative watch novices. Go to Jomashop dot com and do a search for stuff in your price range. Consider the recipients build when looking at size. An average adult man would generally buy a 40-42mm watch, adjust accordingly. From there, think about style of watch. A dive watch is a common first watch but something like the pic below is a good compromise between tool and dress.

I would like to give my son a nice graduation present. Something that he would be able to enjoy for many years to come. I've got a limited budget but am willing to spend something around 1k if needed.

Can you guys give me some brands to look at in that price range?

It would be much appreciated.

At that price point I’d suggest something like a Steinhart aviation chronograph. You can order direct from their web site and if you’re in the US they remove the VAT. The kicker, if you have time, would be to add on a handmade padded alligator strap from Jacob Straps in Spain. All told you should come in under your 1K budget (just). Gail gave me that setup for an anniversary present a couple of years ago and I get compliments on it all the time from watch guys.

I just sold this Movado Dura on Ebay, great watch.
Took it in trade for a cue a few years ago, was saving it for my son who passed away last year.

These are all good ideas and excellent choices, my personal preference is for the
Citizens. Years ago Citizen made a watch they called the Wind Surfer. This is an
excellent watch, durable, sporty or dressy and not over done in useless features, and
every so often you can find a new one on ebay or at a shop. However, while a watch
is a thoughtful and classic gift and a quality time piece can be passed down again and
again, you have to ask yourself if your son is a real watch guy. Myself, like Logical, have quite
the collection, but if your son isn't a real watch guy perhaps a nice Casio or something that
can take a beating would be a good choice.

If you can get close to 1K, I'd say a Tag Heuer.. young guys love 'em.
You can get a Formula One chrono for under a G.

And take a look at Luminox.. very cool watches.

Personally, I'd worry less about the amount of the watch. Buy a great watch with style that he will like. I'd be more conserved with the inscription, which truly will be priceless to your son. Good luck.

A watch is a very personal item. For some men, it's the only jewelry they wear. There are many styles and a lot of younger people don't even wear them anymore. They use their cellphone instead. If you are planning on buying it as a surprise, don't be surprised if it sits in a drawer most of time. I would suggest including him in the final choice or at least find out what brands he likes. It would be better to pay less for a watch that he will actually wear. I understand wanting to get him something special that he will treasure for years to come, but some people would rather have a smart watch, or what their friends have.

That aside, I would have to agree with jonnybegood. Breitling is the way to go. Sure it's at least $1K more than you want to spend, but it's heirloom quality. Something to be passed down. You can tell they are built right as soon as you pick them up. The one I want is 128 grams. I think most watches are around 30 grams.

Ideologist suggested Jomashop.com. That is a great place to check out the different styles and brands. Good luck!!

You haven't really said whether he would prefer a very traditional looking watch, something more modern looking, or perhaps the ubiquitous submariner look.

Like everyone else, I'll give an opinion. For a very traditional look, would suggest Longines. For a modern or submariner, I'd go with Invicta.

All the best,
WW

I am not much of a watch guy , but I have a Seiko automatic that has been good to me for about 10 years. They have some nice ones at 400 to 500.

Check all reviews before buying from any online stores.

Yes, be very careful with grey market purchases. Frankly, with just a one-time purchase I would buy new to make sure you get the manufacturer's warranty.

You can also sometimes get a discount from an authorized dealer on a new watch. I've done this several times.
