I was down at Nick Varner's place in Owensboro a couple of years ago and a guy from southern Illinois came in and we were all talking. He said pool halls and taverns with pool tables, they were all going away in southern Illinois.

In short:
Rooms with good leagues = happy room owners.
Rooms with poor leagues or no leagues = unhappy room owners

Happy room owner = happy environment for us hardcore players.
Unhappy room owners = no rooms to go to.
It's a thin line for hardcore players. We don't like leagues in general but we better start to at least support leagues no matter how we feel about them. Otherwise, we may end up with no rooms to go to.
I for one, can play str8 pool for days and days at home by myself but, even hardcore...... especially hardcore players like myself NEED........HAVE -TO-HAVE competition and competition without healthy rooms is getting harder and harder to find.
Support your local leagues every chance you can and in every way you can.

Only reason our poolroom is still open after 22+ years is our grill, which accounts to well over 90% of our revenue - we have no alcohol sales. Our pool table revenue / usage is at an all-time low for the 22+ years we've been open, despite our hour rates being virtually unchanged ($3/hr per person) over that time period, and our pool environment (tables, balls, cloth, lighting, etc.) being absolute top-of-the-line. If it weren't for my own passion for pool, we would have closed many years ago.
Pool needs colorful heros.There is a handful at best now the rest are pretty boring to watch.Carbon clones of each other..Decades come and go and so does pool..Its always been at it's best when there were more than a handful of colorful Players that entertain and captivate the audience and make people want to play..
I find it amazing you've stayed open without a bar. EVERY successful room in my part of the country would be closed without one. You must have some killer food.
His trick is the food. I've seen the facebook pictures. I would eat there a few times a week if I lived near by.

No kiddin'. That is some sporty looking chow. I'd eat there a lot too.
Not sure what the reason is for closing, but it's not for lack of a league presence. Malarkey's had APA league 5 nights a week, as well as TAP and BCA leagues, and it would be pretty much packed each night. They also had decent Wednesday and Friday night 9-ball tourneys that drew some good talent. Good crowd of regulars as well during the day...
I'm really gutted by this, as I live about 2 miles away and don't really know of anywhere else close by where I'll be able to play regularly. I feel bad for Clark as well, as he is one of the good guys in pool.

Good for you. The Salem, Oregon pool room with 24 9' Centennials and Anniversaries is only open for one reason and that is Jim. He has no where else to go and does not want to go anywhere. He does not sell food or alcohol. All the league play is at two places around town and the bars on 7' tables, never his. His place is right next to the Oregon state buildings and they want his building bad. He says no one could make a living if they didn't own the property free and clear (as he does) and it would be expensive. He is 74 or so and owned the pool room since 1963. How many more years? When he cashes in or sells out, it will be closed.

In my area the rooms that do best are rooms that have the most league players.
Btw, its extremely hard to find a room that is successful AND dry. It's almost unheard of.
Congrats and keep it up. I wish we had more room owners like you.
