John Schmidt has beaten Mosconi

Not to knock it, but we have a referee in the Hall of Fame. How is this accomplishment not greater?

All the best,
WW

There are two types of HOF inductions: For players, and for meritorious service. Minnesota Fats, for example, is in for meritorious service, whereas Mosconi is in for being a player.

What makes you think John's accomplishment wouldn't be enough for meritorious service? At least I think that's what you imply.

Cool as ice, not to be rushed,
at the low 500s, the crowd hushed.
Not one time was a bad decision,
each shot with skill and precision.
The record didn't break, it was crushed!
It would be awesome if they'd just post a couple minute youtube video when John got to 518 in his run (37 complete racks), the break shot, and the shots leading up to the shot which tied and then the shot that broke the 526 record, just to give us a sense of the tension in the room at that moment, and to see John's expression of relief once he had attained his record. I hope we don't have to wait too long!

I may have missed it but what kind of shot was the 627th that he missed? A hard cut, long straight shot or what?

No he would be in the player category for sure. I think it would be almost an insult for him to be in the meritorious service category.

This feat is absolutely stunning.

Better than a 900 series bowling.
Better than 8 consecutive golf majors........etc.

This is the most amazing pool shooting achievement in many, many decades.

Can you imagine the pressure while shooting #526? Or #527? Or #600?
He will be recognized worldwide for this, written into history, all deserved.
Wow!

Slow down hot rod better than 8 straight golf majors, I hardly think so , it's a great accomplishment for sure however he is the only one who has ever made it a point to break the record and there is no one at the same time playing against him and in golf the god changes the conditions you can't change them on your own changing tables cleaning balls reversing ends of the table and so , if any golfer was to win 8 straight majors it would be the biggest accomplishment in sports history bar none period JS is a golfer also I'd think he would certainly agree with that ,,

Scary that for someone whose played as much as he has going after this record as hard as he has in the past 6 months, that he stated he's just figured out something in his game, and within 24 hours of that statement he runs 626! I would be curious what that one discovery was?

In the interview he said that his 370+ the other day was the most technically sound run of his life and that he only had one shot that he got bad position. Pretty incredible considering how many 400+ runs he has. My feeling is that it has something to do with being 100% into running the rack as clean as he can.

In player class, he likely does not get in, given tournament wins compared to others. You sure he doesn't make the meritorious category, given this accomplishment? Think about it.

I have an accustats player analysis 14.1 run with John Schmidt commenting on his run. I also have one of Ortmann.

I wonder if that is a possibility here.

Based on Fred's comment, John said that he had just figured out something about his game the day before. This was separate from his decision to start racking at the opposite end of the table, which is speculated may have also helped him.
I may have misunderstood, as he had a stream of consciousness going, but this is what he said:

"I"m starting to really get it figured out and at 46 years old I'm playing the best straight pool of my life. If someone was to play me, they'd have to pack a lunch because I'm running a hundred just like every inning.."

He goes on to clarify that nobody is hitting back, but he feels he's playing the best straight pool of his life.

I tend to agree, I don't see him as a HOF player based on his accomplishments as a professional player and certainly breaking a novelty record is a great thing but not of HOF worthy based on that

Do we know how long it took? What are the day's stats?

pj
chgo

According to the New York Times (not that you can trust them), nearly four hours. Probably realistic, given fifteen minutes either way. Mosconi said his 526 was about two hours and twenty minutes.

I feel the host room deserves a little exposure in this thread.

A gracious host

Absolutely, I'm not trying to downplay the achievement, it is clearly a very difficult thing to do, as no-one has done it before! I'm just saying its not really possible to make direct comparisons to other sports (or even pool). For example is a 200 and out in competition more or less impressive (perhaps impressive is the wrong word there, but what would a pro prefer)? Is 11 racks in a row of 9-Ball in competition more or less impressive and so on...

Be careful not to mix someone’s hyperbole in a moment of exhilaration, with facts.
626 is hard to do.
No one in the history of the world has done it.
100 balls better than second best.
Impressive is not a good enough descriptor.
Once in a while hyperbole is in order, to set the tone.
(You must be a golfer or a snooker player).

Any that thinks John doesn't deserve to be in the HOF, even if for nothing but:

BREAKING WILLIES record 5hat stood for DECADES AND DECADES.....

Well, you need to rush to the doc and get a brain scan.

There are people currently in the HOF that on their best day wouldn't even come close no matter how long we gave them to practice.

Come on folks, this shouldn't even be a freaking question!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Really?
