After more than 15 years with these cues sitting around, stored in the only case I
have long enough for a 34" shaft, I did something with them that turned out to be a cool project.
Paul Drexler did a terrific job, even sent me the old ivory butt caps.
The new butt caps are very white ivory from billiard balls.
One cue was restored as close as possible back to original with Paul cleaning &
reusing the original Cortland, and he applied old school lacquer finish.
Paul fitted all three original Rambow shafts to the one cue, still straight, even the 34" shafts.
I also have 4 of Willie Mosconi's Rambow shafts I would like to refit and use.

The other two were converted to more modern wrapless players with new shafts.
Really fat butts on all three, still straight, and according to Paul the blanks were excellent.
I played with the purple heart cue last night and it is a very good playing cue.


You might see a little sawdust on one of the butt caps, bad pics.
You can see the original butt caps in one of the pics.

What do you think
Who would convert a perfectly good Rambow?
The wraps on 2 had been changed, the ivory was cracked, butt caps were loose, etc.
Why not turn them into great playing cues rather than have them sit around for another 15 years.










 
Great project, thanks for showing them off!

Personally, I would have trouble messing with the old cues, it would take me 15 years to decide to do it. :grin-square:

Wonderful display of Rambows. You should put this on the cue gallery as well. And by the way, there is a historic cue thread, if you search for it. These are deserving.

I agree with all the restoration as well. Not only are they great looking, but I would bet they're still playable, even by today's standards.

I hope there is a bit of finish over those brass joints, as they will tarnish if not.

Also from a historic cue post, 1if you Google Otis Skinner he was quite a famous actor and passed away in 1942.
When I showed the cue to Deano Andrews he told me who Otis Skinner was.
 
This is about as classic as it gets. Paired with the Mosconi shafts, it's a monster set.

There's a fourth cue involved in the project but not finished.
Paul has an ebony Davis blank I've had since 2007, that is from the first batch of blanks
John made when he started building blanks again.
Basically I turned a bunch of stuff I've had laying around into 4 nice cues in a package deal.
 
Wow, very nice. I would have done the same. There's something rewarding with creating something that will be enjoyed for decades to come. Someone will treasure those cues long after all of us are gone. The Mosconi shafts are just awesome.

Agree. Would do the same. Beautiful cues.
