World Cup of Pool ?

In the 2019 World Cup of Pool Shaw and Melling teamed up as Team Great Britain. So it does not matter if the two players are not from the same country or citizens of the same country?

If that is true and players can country hop to a country they don't live in because they think another player will give them a better chance at winning, then could Alex hop in with Shane and be a Team America?

I have seen a England 1 and England 2 before.

Trying to understand how that works for teams to be recognized for the World Cup of Pool.

Pretty sure Scotland and England are both considered parts of GB. I think the WC is based on citizenship. Alex could play with Phillipines or Canada as he has dual citizenship. Also, the home nation is allowed two teams.

Just because you could have two of the worlds best players on the same team, doesn't mean good results. There is more to it than that when the pressure kicks in. Not sure if Shane and Alex could ever build the type of trust and comfort with each other.
Sky and Shane fit together, I wouldn't change that up. I would think they would match up against just about any other team in the world some action...

Them against the Ko brothers would be tough action.

Yes, this is something that has changed in recent years. Great Britain has an Olympic team, not each member of the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). Now they compete as one on a team called Great Britain. I'm not sure exactly when and why this changed.

Scotland has a population of about 5.4 million, Wales 3.1, England 53 million, and Northern Ireland 1.9 million so of the 63.4 million people of Great Britain, about five of every six British people are English.

Seems they have followed suit at the world cup of pool. The host nation at the World Cup of Pool is customarily permitted two teams, so England 1 and England 2 competed in the same event before this change was made.

Good thing there isn't an "Asian" team. No one else would ever win. ;)

Just to be pedantic, Northern Ireland is not part of Great Britain.
GB is only England, Scotland &Wales.

However, Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom.
The United Kingdom is only it's shortened name.
When you use it's full name, things become clear.
The full name is: "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland"

Anyway, I believe Matchroom changed their rules to get the inclusion of Jayson Shaw with a decent partner.
Prior to this he was paired with E8B (English 8Ball) players, that weren't really experienced at 9Ball.

Really?

So Shaw spends most of his time in the US, plays for the Europeans and is and Irishmen. Pretty smart of him money wise.

I wish the same thought pattern would be used when it comes to Team USA and the Mosconi Cup. USA should be able to have Canada picks if Europe can pick from all over Europe.

They know they have and advantage and laugh all the way to the bank.

The World Cup of Pool is my favorite pool event. Match Room puts on good pool events so I have to trust they know what they are doing.

Yes, I know all that, but I still think that the comparison with the Olympics (in which the team called Great Britain includes the four nations of the UK) is the easy way to make the change at the WCOP intelligible for most.

Surely a USA team should be able to pick from all over the USA and nowhere else? I guess you could have a North American, or Americas, team. That would solve that problem and allow the team formerly known as the USA to pick Canadians. But then you wouldn’t be called the USA ..............

As for your beef about Shaw playing for a country he doesn’t live in, would you also suggest that half of the USA’s soccer team shouldn’t be eligible because they have accepted multi-million dollar offers to play, and therefore live, elsewhere. Or would that be unfair too?

One of our European posters estimated that there are at least 10 times as many nine ball players in America than Europe. I've never taken kindly to the idea of using Canada as a crutch here.

Jayson is Scottish.

If you are born in Northern Ireland, you hold either British or Irish citizenship - it's up to the individual.

You do know that Canada is in N. America but not the USA, right? How could Europe pick a team without picking from Europe? Sounds kinda crazy, doesn't it? Look, when the MC started pool was waaaay bigger in the US than now plus its nearly as big as Europe combined. Now pool has taken off in Europe and slacked off here. At the pro level there are more top players in EU than here. Just the way it is. Us having Canada wouldn't change things much if any.

Agreed.

So Jayson is Scottish and therefore by default is also British.

A poor analogy might be a person from Houston is a Houstonian and therefore by default is also a Texan

It’s complicated by the fact that the UK often plays as four different teams in professional sports. Four teams equals four FIFA (international soccer authority) votes so why change when you have so much power? Some other sports follow the same model. We should play as GB/UK so the pool move is a good one from a purists point of view.

Geography is not everyone’s strong point. How geography relates to other stufff is often a next step. In cases like this (the OP) it’s rather embarrassing.

Actually you hold both. The passport is just evidence of the citizenship.
You choose if you want to be British, Irish, or both (dual citizenship). Its up to the individual. Not much impact on this conversation tho as neither have been in WCOP!

True. Shane/ Orcollo didn’t fare well in Manny Pacquiao tourney some years ago losing to couple of teenagers (1 boy 1 girl). That probably led to deterioration of their relationship :)

Not sure if that is the reason. I look at it as positive since it frees up spots for other countries when they combine into one.
They should have done that years ago so that the great George Best (probably the best player not to have played in THE World Cup) can play. :p

It should be obvious to everyone that most Americans could not care less about soccer. That's why NONE of our top athletes play it. The world should be quiet and thankful that is the case. Roll your eyes all you want.
