whatever happened to this guy? he was a champion in the 90s. He played around cincy/ky/oneida tn/nashville/knoxville.

I thought Steve Shaw was from Arizona, unless that's a different guy.
Steve "Stevie Wonder" Shaw. I thought he was originally from Albuquerque New Mexico. I ran across him in Albuquerque early 1980 at the pool hall that Jimmy Moore hung out at. The next time I saw him he was hanging out around Sacramento several years later. We hung out together for awhile hustling bars. A very strong player that took down several scores while he was around Sacramento and the Bay Area. I only heard the nickname of "Cat Head" from a local bar hustler long after Steve had left the area. I do remember him mention wanting to head down to either Alabama or Georgia for some pool action. He also mentioned the places he was going to could be rough. Somebody must've read my mind as I did a search for him on AZ within the last week or so wondering of his whereabouts. Wherever he is, I hope he's doing O.K......

I remember Steve coming out to Raytown Recreation. This had to be in mid to late 80's before Shooters opened up in Olathe. He played Rick Thompson 20 a game 9 ball and they played a few games then Rick pulled up sensing a trap, I think Steve was a game winner.

I told Steve about an excellent bar table tournament that was happening that weekend at a place called Bobby Jeans. I couldn't play or even watch because I wasn't 21 but steered him there. I heard he snapped off the tournament against the best local players. At that time, he told me he was from the Arizona area. I never heard the name Cathead but thinking back he did have a big head with a hair full of curls IIRC.

You're right, he was from New Mexico.

stevie shaw

I was told stevie shaw was known as the Albuquerque kid. He came through pueblo Colorado when he was young (maybe 14-16) and was told he was very strong on the bar table.

I knew steve in high school (1970-73). My father was a pool player and we had a home table. I met him in 9th grade. There weren't that many good young players around. I first played him at the rack n' rail in Albuquerque. He came to the house and played a few times. My dad told me not to bet him, said "he had the touch" and he did. He played left handed and had a balabushka cue. We did once go on a small pool hustling trip to Farmington NM. We were in 11th grade. Never saw him again after high school. There was an article in local paper once about his pool lifestyle. I've played my whole life and been in quite a few pool halls. I've never played a better player. I'm fairly certain he was the best player in most pool halls he entered.

he was living in danville ky in the 80sworking at a factory he still played but only a fraction of what i had heard he could play. Fat eric was steering him he still won but not alot. dont think he had a chance against Brumback

Croside, after reading your very first post on this forum - none of it remotely or even close to being true, one has to wonder what your agenda is and where your source of information came from. In the future, if you ever post an opinion again preface it with IMO and dont post heresay what you believe to be or want to be true without knowing what is real.

My point is he never worked in a factory in the 80s and never lived where you said he did AND if you were told that by Eric, he was just blowing smoke to make you believe that on purpose. He only ran with Eric for one day at the request of his main backer. You even know who that was?

No worries Croside, Stevie valued that anonymity. He made a few 5 figure scores one being close to 6 around Irvine that much I'll say. Definitely moved like a ghost more like a black cat. One interesting story that guy flew way under radar. Take care
