a thread below got me thinking
some cuemakers use a block of ivory for their ivory joints
some sleeve ivory over a piloted steel joint
and some sleeve ivory around wood
there may be other ways i dont know about
would you explain the pros/cons of the methods and does it really make a difference?
thanks
merry christmas and happy new year to all

I don’t know the pros and cons but IMO only the solid ivory joint is the real thing. The other sleeved joints are strictly decorative.

i wish some of the cuemakers would comment on this tommy T'
personally i think it blends the qualities of the materials...icbw...thats why i asked the question

great comments in the link
i am surprised cuemakers have not reponded

I have built several cues with ivory joints. Usually the joint is one inch, 3/4 is bored out for the tenon leaving 1/4 solid cap.
Flat faced.
For “solid” ivory joints, please expand on this. It has to be attached somehow, you can’t just glue the joint on the face of the butt.

T-shaped ? Stem goes down the forearm and joint screw holds it in place.
Joey~Not messing around with ivory~

Joey I know you ain’t messing around with ivory being in California.
T shaped is a way. But in a blind taste test like all other joints I seriously doubt anyone could tell.
