Developing a pool aptitude test

another place would have greeters take walkins off the street

and a last place made orientation mandatory. the hope being new people start together and stick together
I think both these things would put me off.

Same with homework, I agree with Rexus about that.

It's leisure time, people want to feel relaxed and naturally ('effortlessly') engaged, not forced or pressured.

But I think high drop-out is just part of the package too. For lots of people pool is an occasional hobby. If you want 80% of them to become regulars, you're probably not being realistic.

Another way to go about it would be to focus on the opposite end: A place where I play has a singles league, with several divisions. The fixtures and tables posted in the venue, the social media presence, and league participants talking about the league, all create something other players are aware of and can aspire to joining.

Wonder what language would be right one of all people taking test?

IQ about Pool shows when person plays, winning is proof of ability to play.

This is not a joke.

When playing pool some people have a awareness of whats on the table as opposed to what they can do.

I am thinking someone new goes to a pool hall and instead of someone saying join or lets shoot, a player can be given a written test or brochure.

The potential pool player can read it and then become informed of the great sport while being given a spatial awareness test.

Ive been hearing about social media challenges. How about billiard IQ test, pros and amateurs alike can use it to build community?

Sports teams do this, I dont know if there is a standard for pool though.

the main concept is let new people read about pool and get educated on it.

i tried some brain teasers only pool players would know and it feels fun

then the standard ones about physics
A brochure at a pool hall would be nice. It would be a good thing for either a hall, or better yet, someone in the industry, like diamond/brunswick/etc to produce and distribute to their customers. Some of the older pool books are good for introducing new players to the game, some of the old mosconi books, and many beginner books have the right idea. The older books seem to be very good at introducing a complete beginner (pre internet and sometimes color tv era) to the ideas of pool. Mastering Pool by George Fels is a real trip, good book even for the more advanced players. Back then they kept it simple and that's probably best for beginners. Show a standard pool stance, open and closed bridge, how to follow, draw, etc. Maybe introduce something like aiming (ghost ball would probably be simplest). Work in the fact that by using different spin, you can leave the cueball in an easy spot for the next shot. I had a non pool playing buddy and I explained cueball spin and leave to him and it blew his mind. He's a smart guy but he thought every shot was random other than how far the cb goes after a hit (speed/hardness of shot). It's like a light bulb went off and he got way more interested. Work in the approximate angle the CB takes after contact on a rolling or a stop/non rolling shot.

I don't know if I'd mess much with showing banks, maybe just a simple mirror system and say it takes practice to get the feel. Fly on the wall is great for teaching people 3 rail in person, but it's probably WAY too much for a beginner brochure.

Don't assume anything, explain what CHALK is and how/why you should use it on every shot. Explain that clean, washed and dried hands will make playing and stroking much smoother/better. It's simple stuff we don't even think about, but I know from seeing my non pool playing friends shoot 8 shots without chalk until they miscue, it's not a thing beginners know about. If you don't know, you don't know.

No clue if there would be enough space, but simple pool etiquette might be a good addition, or make a separate brochure. Things like not sitting drinks or your butt on the table, regular bathing, not talking or moving around while your opponent shoots, not being on your phone and missing your turn, etc. The phone thing... good luck with younger non pool players. You gotta get them interested before they will leave their phone in their pocket. Speaking of phones... maybe a QR code at the counter or by the cue racks could get a few cell phone zombies to view the material. Paper is so "grandpa tier" in today's world.

Pocket speed and not needing to hit hard would be a good thing to show as would follow through. It might even be worthwhile to show the "shoot the CB to the diamond and back to your tip" drill for getting your stroke straight. That one drill can give new players the feel for the mechanics and give them hope in this punishing game.

Market pool to women. The men will show up.
This is no shit. I think any hall that doesn't have a ladies night doesn't understand marketing. Half price drinks and cheap table time for ladies. Men can come in, but it's full price. The only one complaining is cheap skates and the glass of ice water they drink doesn't really earn much for the hall.

Billiard Aptitude Test would be like citzenship questions:
The main areas of the BAT is in knowledge, etiquette and reading shot diagrams.

Knowledge Question Content:
Which countries compete in the Mosconi Cup?
What does WPBA stand for?

Etiquette Question Content:
You go down on a shot and a player on an adjacent table bumps into you do you:
a) punch player in face
b) tell them to shoot first
c) tell them to wait for you to shoot first
d) make eye contact and wait to be acknowledged

There are tons of aiming threads and lots of diagrams to pick from. Are any standardized as part of the WPA guidelines for documentation?

As for language it should be translated by local pool rooms, it could be a pool constitution. Or at least the phrase every pool player knows, the secret handshake.

i request a week to respond.

Well I would think someone who pretends to be as smart as you do should come up with your own reply, or answer.

We do not need no stinkin test, Pool is like a Mile Race, Runner who finishes first is winner.

Pool is not like a Western Equtation Event, where any little girl could win if her parents grease the judges palm with enoght money.

I think post 27 addresses your concerns. Let me know what if you have any questions.

Good one. You didn't tell us you did stand up on the side.

I consider myself an intelligent person. Your posts stump me but there's nothing appealing about them.
PLEASE find some other place to hang out. Your moronic/asinine threads are lame and tiresome. For starters.
If only forum membership required such a test.

One of my favourite things on this forum now is seeing these threads and trying to extrapolate what ridiculous thing he's suggested this time. That said, I will admit that sometimes I do view the filtered content.

Thanks rexus31. I appreciate the comment post and feedback.

If anyone wants to support my billiard movement, I will be releasing an illustrated children's book introducing shapes through billiards.
Part of having an aptitude test is giving people something to study.

If anyone needs a test review for the BAT you can purchase a soon to be released BAT study guide.
Currently I am working on an insert packet players can give to children.
My agency is allowing me to post this one concept image.
There are four hidden messages and two encrypted messages in the following diagram.

If you can recognize them please post and support this thread.

Sample Problem from the Billiard Aptitude Test.

How would you play the following as combo shots?

Please submit your responses in private message.

Posting the answers publicly is discouraged.

please number the pockets from top left going counterclockwise from one to six.

indicate which pocket based on the numbering system.

I think this could work, its a free response question.

He's just throwing ideas against the wall to see what sticks.

Unfortunately for him, there's no wall.
That's an outstanding line. I didn't want to laugh react because I'm against running Justnum down, but credit where it's due...

I'm very curious to hear why you think people don't return. I don't think it has anything to do with the game itself.
The truth is, pool isn't actually fun at all. It is incredibly boring for the average person. Pool is very available to play everywhere.

10,000 foot view, If it was so fantastic you could not stop people from playing. Truth, it is not only boring to play for the average person but totally unwatchable.

Even pool players don't care to watch it. Just look at YouTube. Pool videos don't get watched much. Yet a video on camping will get 500,000 views. If that can be considered as a poll, no one cares about pool.

I have gotten away from pool several times for years at a time. When I would go back and start playing again my first feelings were always, what the hell did I ever find interesting or fun about this.

I actually had to make myself keep playing feeling like, I really don't want to just throw away all those years I've devoted to this game.

Bottom line, pool for the most part is not fun, is boring to play and watch and I can't believe people who play it for the first time ever play it the second time.
That's the truth.

If you feel it is not an engaging activity for yoy than by all means quit. You don't need to wait for the entire rest of the world to agree with you.

I do not find it boring although I do find practice tedious. I enjoy pool the same way I enjoy golf. If 99% of the world found golf and pool uniteresting it would not change a thing for me as longvas there was one other person around willing to play with me.

I do not really enjoy jazz music so I just don't listen to it. I don't feel a need to campain against it or insist that there is something wrong with anyone who does enjoy it.
