I'm tired of my friends giving up the game of pool due to their age with excuses like; my eyesight is bad, the OB looks fuzzy, I have double vision, can't see the end of a nine foot table, the women don't look at me anymore .. etc. There's a huge market out there for instructors who want to take advantage of it. Start some new classes such as:

- How to play with fuzzy balls:cool:. A fuzzy ball sort of looks like a corona virus .. a whole lot easier to aim at one of those little points sticking out than it is to aim at a spot on a smooth clean polished ball!

- How to play with double vision. Which ball to aim at, split the distance theory, etc

- How to play on a nine foot table. Pick a spot on cloth half way between CB and OB on path to contact point and aim at that.

- How to get the women to notice you. Most women, because of your age, probably already know you're more secure financially than the Wham Bam 30 second wonders they're used to being with and instead of storing your cue extension in your bag store it down the front of your pants, and get your size 16 sneakers out of your bag when you play along with your 'Experience is the Teacher' t-shirt. Problem solved!!

You're Welcome!

I hear that at the Club all the time. I tell them now is the time to play since you are retired. You are still playing on Gold Crown I just like before. You are still shooting Brunswick Centennial Balls. You are still shooting with house cues. Just Rack 'em and Shoot 'em. I tell them to just make the ball and don't worry about your position we can put you in cue ball in hand every shot until you start making a few Balls. The guys are in their 80's and 90's at least they are playing.

It would help if pool halls resumed expanded operating hours.

Locally, one of our largest pool halls is closed Mon-Wed and
opens 5pm all other days, except Sun. it’s 1pm. A popular hall
opens at 5pm every day incldg wkends; another opens at 4pm
weekdays and 3pm weekends and the same applies to a fourth
pool hall that opens 4pm every day except on Sundays it’s 12pm.

I’m concerned that there may be mask mandates instituted again
or even temporary closures if the new COVID infection rates don’t
seriously and permanently start to decline. In LA, as of yesterday,
100% of the hospitalized COVID cases were unvaccinated people.

Last month, less than 1 in a 100 deaths were unvaccinated people.
Back in January, COVID deaths were over 4,400 per day. A couple
of days ago ago, it was down to 389 COVID deaths. And those deaths
are avoidable because it is predominantly unvaccinated people dying.

The Delta strain of COVID is the worst, most contagious version so far.
Vaccinated people even can get infected but vaccinated people aren’t
being hospitalized and dying from it. Unvaccinated people are and the
numbers are skyrocketing nationwide. Look at the trend in the state
where you now reside. Why is the vaccination rate so low? Why is the
infection rate increasing? Why are people dying? Why are all these new
cases and deaths basically unvaccinated people? Why aren’t you and
your family vaccinated? Why aren’t you telling others to get vaccinated?

Look, do what you are gonna do but if more folks did something different
than right now, the math I just educated you about would improve fast and
people could stop dying needlessly every day from COVID because every
new death from this point forward is really avoidable if people get vaccinated.

So pool locally has resumed with limited hours but COVID infections are on
the rise again. There are specific state guidelines that apply and restrictions
will be imposed again if our numbers continue to worsen. At this point, it is
hard to be optimistic since new COVID vaccinations are progressing slowly.

My worry is unvaccinated people will get infected and pool halls have to close.
At the least, imposition of mask wearing would be mandated like LA had to do.

Fortunately our Club is open 4:00a.m. until Midnight 7 days a week. Private Clubs are worth their weight in Gold.

I forgot to mention that the closing times are also earlier. It all translates into revenue per hr per patron.
The financial metrics tell you if operating at a profit or break even and when and how you’re not doing it.
It’s going to remain financially perilous for pool halls as long as COVID, or it’s equivalent, remains a threat.

Keep one foot on the floor in the Main.

Take your soap box to NPR.

I am just saying pool halls are struggling in my neck of the woods.
The virus is undermining reopening. In LA, there’s a mask mandate.

Vaccines seem to be the only option for resumption of any normal business.
None of this information was inaccurate and others may suffer the same fate.

It is only political when you try turning it into that. Pool is a business & it is being
challenged to remain profitable due to a problem that otherwise seems solvable.

I’m curious. Why do they seem to believe that you are more likely to catch a virus after 5 PM, than before?

Before I try responding, let me address one point earlier raised…….I completely concur about the rules of pool.

I was told by two of the pool room owners it is economics. The temperatures in our neck of the woods have been
blistering hot. As high as 115 degrees and at 11pm at night it can still be around 100 degrees. So the utility cost
for normal hours would be economically oppressive since it involves peak utility rates. Next is the salary and payroll
related costs that would involve 6 more hours daily. The owners have looked at what it costs to run the pool hall and
during those hours, the business and counter sales do not justify opening. Some of the pool hall owners actually had
to return to working a job besides the daunting task operating a pool hall that was closed for over a year. Business is tentative & inconsistent due to the virus. So quitting a paying job so you could personally open and manage a pool
hall with regular hours like before, but this time actually lose money, is just plain stupid. It’s a real business quagmire.

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack your light and humorous thread with gloom and doom. I'll go start my own thread .. Thank You!!

Well the problem is many business’s are struggling.

Room owner need to be creative, and get word out they are open for business.

Then the experience need be positive when people come to see what Pool is.

Might do a FREE BEGINNERS CLINIC, offer some one who is good player, some sort of inventive to do 1.5 hr Free clinic.

Where I live we have Ladies group that plays Mondays, Noon to 3p.

They do free clinics, and their group is growing.

No world class players, but group who shows up, plays, and has fun.
