Took The Old McDermott Out For A Stroll Today

I originally was going to sell it but, after playing with it for a bit, I liked it better than my custom cue, so I sold the Richard Black instead.

This cue is one of the best playing cues I have ever played with and everybody who has tried it has liked it and many have asked to buy it. I have turned down numerous offers of over many times what I paid for it.

I sent it back to McDermott for a refinish a few years ago and had another shaft made for it as a spare. The original shaft is still in amazing condition and it plays as good as brand new. I can’t count the many thousands and thousands of games are on this cue and I have used it to to break with many thousands of times, too.

I put it in my carrying bag today, with the original shaft, and took it to play and I was glad I did.

I haven’t put many games on it since I got it refinished and it was a pleasure to play with today.

It is around 21oz and it has a full 13mm, or a bit larger, tip and it drives the cue ball around very smoothly with minimal effort.

I can’t wait to take it out again as soon as I get a chance.

I think the C-series cues were the best they ever made.

This is a beautiful cue. I never had the opportunity to play with a C series. Some of my favorite cues ever (and I've owned many customs, etc) were my D Series Mickey D's (as I called them) combined with a 314 shaft. Played fantastic IMO. (Edited to add, my avatar is a photo taken of me during some tournament in Richmond, VA around 2013'ish. There was a professional photographer walking around and photographing the matches. I just noticed, I'm using a D series/Predator 314-2 combo in that photo. I loved that cue.)
 
I can’t recall off the top of my head, but I’ve had a few D’s and I still have this C. I think C’s and D’s play and feel excellent, though I generally prefer the inlay design of the D’s.

I generally really good at recalling how much and where I have bought cues over the years, but for the life of me I don’t recall where I bought this, though I do remember paying $150 for it and probably off of Craigslist around 2009.

Those old mcd’s sure play nice. Better now than when they were new.
 
Nice to see some love for McDermott cues. The D series was out when I started playing. I still have some in my collection. Here is a picture.

I have a D-1 in natural maple ( many I saw were blue or green lol ) I snagged about 4 years ago after looking for one because I always wanted one. Full shaft. Straight as an arrow. Triangle. Simple and solid.

I enjoy taking it out once in awhile like OP and playing. I need to add just a little weight but you cannot get D series weight bolts anywhere and I hunted.

That is a nice bunch of cues you have.

AES is A. E. Schmidt.

I think them and McDermott had some kind of deal going on before.
 
Thanks. Yes A E Schmidt. I couldn’t find anything out about it, but it has very similar features to McDermotts. The forearm and ring work is basically the came as the C8.
 
Here are the forearms. The veneers on the AES and the C8 are different colors.

I think McDermott used to make some cues for AES and so did Viking.

My friend, Fred Schmidt, had a cue made by them that had a C-14 butt sleeve and a different model forearm. His cue had the AES logo like yours.

The butt sleeve on your AES is modified from the McDermott C-14 butt.
