Needed or not?

I know my cue is el cheapo to you guys at 220. It came with a nice Viking 1x2 hard case which works perfectly. I was wondering if any of you guys use joint protectors because videos pop up on my YouTube algorithm one in a while. I didn’t even have a case for my old huebler. Just hauled it in the back seat of my car and never had any joint issues. Anyways, I’ve already purchased the cue, Kamui
glove and the last4ever nickel tool so I’m around 265 into this so far. I really like cue and would like it to perform its best for a long time. Opinions on joint protectors please?

I don’t use JPs, and frankly don’t see a need for them. The process of prepping and maintaining is already long enough, why add extra time without any return on the investment?

Total waste of time. Your pin is steel.

For 12 - 30 bucks they protect against dirt and grit getting in the shaft collar and protect against something like dropping the butt and bending the pin.

If the shaft is woode threads that dirt can wear them down making it lose. I have an OB with loose threads because the guy i got it off of didnt take care of it.

I have seen pins bent by dropping and it means a new cue. Usually on a entry level cue. To me, 12$-30 is worth the protection.

They used a brass insert for the female threads on my v-pro shaft and the pin is 5/16x18 stainless steel fwiw

So you got a low cost Viking with a case....and you don’t even have a case for your Heubler?
...that’s like leaving your Mustang outdoors and parking your Lada in the garage.

Viking makes good cues.

It is 265 directly from Viking with no case
but I bought it from billiards.com for 220 with the hard case. Not bad imo

It’s looking like a solid NO on the joint protectors. I dont get nearly as angry as I used to and am not planning on throwing the cue bag down a flight of stairs or anything. My buddy once snapped a house cue in half after losing a bet. We use to gamble heavily. My other friend once lost his cue because he ran out of cash and put in the pot then lost his match.it was a 200 custom cue which was expensive back then at least to us Good times. lol

The chance of damaging threads is near zero.
Totally agree! And if a person is likely to drop one it could just as easily happen when the JPs are removed. It’s kinda like aircraft maintenance…when I replace a hydraulic pump and I have the new pump in hand it’s a waste of time to cap the open hydro lines for 2 to 3 seconds only to have to remove them for the install.

Most of my cues are steel or implex jointed sub 50 dollar rebranded imports; hand selected but right off the racks. The remaining 4 are past the century mark. One cue shop sneaky at $200, a Huebler sneaky at $120, A gift Players in the low 100s I believe, and a McLucky with 2 shafts that has exceeded the $100 mark.
They all got those funny looking Chinese long reach plastic caps. They still disappear in the case tubes without a spacer propping them.
I've gone from no case; proudly hand-holding the two pieces, to bags and finally cases but soon after bags, it was always caps. I like the ritual. It's about respect for the tools and acquiring the pool frame of mind.

If you have a Uniloc quick release, you'd damn sure better use joint protectors. Other "normal" pins, I don't think they're that important.

They're nice for IDing your cues without lifting them out of the cases.

But if you have two cues and only one 1x2 case, it don't matter.
