After absence of a decade, the 2022 Predator WPA World 8 Ball Championship (Prizemoney $200K) will be held in Puerto Rico from 14-20 Nov2022.
But it clashes with Matchroom's inaugural European Open 9 Ball (Prizemoney $200K) from 15-20 Nov2022. Hopefully one of them is rescheduled to avoid watered down fields in both events if they clash.

PAST WINNERS

It’s been advertised and in the WPA calendar as the Puerto Rico Open (event 6 of the Predator Pro Billiard Series with date TBA). Now it’s the World 8-ball Championship and scheduled on top of the European Open? Kind of curious what that’s about.

And what makes an 8-ball world championship? Is it an open event? Invite only? Qualifiers? Ranking-based? What events set the rankings?

I’m kind of confused.

i think it has to be open and have a big enough prize fund to get the WPA sanction

No, Matchroom scheduled on top of this event. Predator had the dates reserved on the WPA calendar. Matchroom did the same and scheduled the World Cup of Pool on top of another Predator event. That is how Matchroom operates.

Good old worthless WPA.

Why would it be open? Just because it isn't rotation? The WPA World 9 Ball & 10 Ball are not open. It is earned spots based on rankings, allocations, qualifiers, and some host country and promoter wild cards. Just like every WPA World Championship. Or has Matchroom changed that to inflate the entry list?

yes, they are open, but you have to qualify. the opposite is invitational

Gotcha. I never saw which made the WPA calendar first. I know the dates were TBA for a long time. CSI still has it that way on their website.

Not a good situation here, but it underscores why sanctioning is still important. Only one event producer can lock up the dates intended for an event.

It would be nice if this can be worked out to enable players to compete in both events. Looking out at November, though, the International Open doesn't finish until November 6, and the Mosconi is set to start on November 30. Not much wriggle room in the event calendar.

Fingers are crossed.

I for one hope Matchroom wins the battle for talent and eyeballs against the WPA, which has been an almost completely useless so-called governing body.

I think the double booking is a bit of a gaffe and the WCoP is another less severe example. Hopefully we can do better in the future. But I wouldn’t overlook the fact that there are only two instances of this and the rest of the calendar is about as organized as you could ask for. There is some value occurring.

Recognizing that the situation could possibly escalate, I think calling it a battle is premature.

I hope pro pool is robust enough to accommodate both the Matchroom Series and the CSI/Predator Series, as well as all the WPA sanctioned Euro-tour events. It will take greater cooperation among the event producers than ever seen before to make it happen, but why should we give up the dream?

Pro pool is on the precipice of something very special and while there will be a few scheduling conflicts between pool's top producers, we should continue to strive to maintain pro pool's new event model, which offers a substantial income to the game's elite players.

If it so chooses, WPA can be a unifying force in pro pool. Of course, we'll see how it all plays out.

While WPA may not do everything on our wish list, it already is a unifying force in a significant way. It sanctions events and protects dates on the calendar for everybody. That's the kind of important service that's not a big deal until it is.

Since World Cup of Pool (14-19 June) also clash with Predator's Germany Open (14-18 June), in the sprit of give and take, a compromise is Predator reschedule their Germany Open while Matchroom reschedule their European Open. That way, they both get to keep a "World" title and fans get to see all 4 events (1 is long time popular favorite, 2 are new and 1 is a reboot) .
Boom. Problem solved.

Looks like the Germany Open is Predator's event and the Euro Open is Matchroom's, and just happens to take place in Germany.

No, they are diff though MR European Open in same country Germany also. WCOP tickets already selling so hard for MR to reschedule that while European Open announced not too long ago can still be rescheduled.

I wouldn't go there if you paid me. A friend had to go do some contract power-grid work and couldn't wait to get out. Still hasn't recovered fully from a hurricane FIVE years ago. He said he rarely left his room. One of his co-workers got robbed at knife-point by a couple punk-ass locals two blocks from the hotel. Nice, huh? If it wasn't for the weather no one would go there.

No, not at all. Make them reschedule it. They had already scheduled over Predator's dates well before those tickets went on sale and even announcing the WCOP dates.

That's how I see it, too, Mike.
