Those were the days. Archer won the WPA World Championship in 1992, but Tommy threw a masterpiece at him at the US Open.

In an exhibition match I attended on the night before the 1992 US Open 14.1, (during which Sigel would make his famous 150 and out against Zuglan), Archer squared off against Sigel in 9-ball and beat Mike pretty handily. When Archer was named "Player of the Decade" for the 1990s, his play in 1992 was certainly a contributing factor.

I think I have that vhs tape of the Sigel Zuglan match. I think the commentator gave Zuglan a little advice after the match .. need to practice the ‘lag’ 🙂
 
MIke Zuglan was running a room full time from the late 80s in upstate NY. I would stop there on business trips to GE in Schenectady- Mike was in Rotterdam NY - close by. He did not even practice any longer back then. With that, he was still top 5 in the U.S. during the period late 80s to almost mid 90s for 14.1. His only playing time was the Joss tour events and whenever he could show up for a longer 14.1 event.

In 1989 Zuglan could not get away for the revitalized U.S. Open 14.1 in Chicago. Grady M stated on an Accustat tape that he considered Zuglan the best "young" 14.1 player in the U.S.
