Americans - are you happy with what Matchroom is doing with Pool ?

It's been said before and I'll say it again so people quit complaining.

They plan on having enough referees to hand rack every match, they just don't have enough now.

Why when things are explained to people do they keep on complaining?
Complaining can become a habit. My mom got into that when I was 15-16 years old.

I’d say red she would say blue, I’d say blue she would say red. It was a vicious cycle.

I diagnosed her issue, trapped her one day and wow she was pissed. She realized being contrary was a habit as was complaining.

She broke the habit, it took some time.

My biz partner is the same way. Always complaining about everything. I’m gonna trap him next.

It’s a compulsion

I have no idea what referee racking has to do with anything with what I said. If they did not have enough refs ok that's cool. I can live with that. But it does not change the fact that they went from the template to the triangle rack later on.

Just have it be universal across the board for this one time and experiment later on. Especially with as many events they will be producing in the future.

How many Matchroom events have pure open qualifiers and aren't mostly invitational based?
The only invitational events on Matchroom's tournament schedule, aside from the Mosconi, are the Premier League Pool, the World Pool Masters and the World Cup of Pool. None of these four events carry ranking points, which is appropriate.

For the standard non-invitational Matchroom-produced events carrying ranking points, fields are to be based on Matchroom rankings, with the top 32 by rank guaranteed a spot. As in almost every event in the history of pool, producers and promoters get some wild card spots, but most of the spots in the field are to be filled through online registration using the Matchroom website, which gives no ranking preference to any of those not automatically qualified. In short, everybody has access to playing in all the Matchroom non-invitational events as long as they sign up soon enough.

That means that the truly worthy will, bit by bit, find their way into the Matchroom Top 32 and will find a long-term career in pool. The door is wide open for emerging talent, and that's just as it should be.

My mom was a happy person and we had a great childhood; however, me and my brothers have a little saying "She wasn't happy unless she was complaining". :)

Correct, it didn't change the fact they went from template to triangle - it is THE REASON they went from template to triangle.

It is all spelled out in the video, maybe Fatboy needs to trap you to?

I agree. I have tournament green on my home table. I don't recall a recent match where any pro has played on tournament green. But I do prefer it.

I chose green for one because I like it. + 2, all the local tables I play on for League have green cloth.
All of the league tables I play on are stained blue or green felt depending on the venue. One owner puts out ted chalk.

I prefer blue or green and have blue at home because 1) it's my favorite color and 2) it's what all the local bars have. If they had green I would seriously consider green but not sure I could switch. Gray seems ok but don't remember playing on it so no opinion on play. I have zero complaints about it being on TV.

Please for the love of God, the Queen and pool fans everywhere

Make the 5 ball orange again!!!!!

Otherwise brilliant job

Fatboy <———-has the Queen on speed dial, but doesn’t want to bother her yet

If you call the Queen Mum, give her some time to answer the phone. She’s going to turn 96 soon.

The best thing that they are doing is elevating the way they present the tournaments. You get the feeling during this past week that you were watching the world championship and not just two guys playing pool. They did a good job giving you a sense of the outside matches and the context of any given match.

They also keep things moving, so no downtime (aside from commercial breaks). It’s nice that we don’t have to sit there and watch the ref rack. Or if a player takes a break we don’t sit and watch for them to come back.

I like that they are trying new things with their presentation. The performance coach was a bust and I noticed that they abandoned it by the third day. But I think they should do more of those player vignettes. They need to give more opportunities for the players personalities to come out. I would like to see them do fun challenges on the outside tables or something in between matches. It could be speed pool, a “show your best trick shot” contest, or something.

To echo what Emily alluded to in an interview, one of their strengths is that they aren’t players and fans first. Although there does appear to be passion for the game, they are promoters first and fans second. I think that provides a different perspective.

Matchroom puts on one hell of a production, no denying that. But I kind of wonder about the future once they've pretty much reached monopoly status. Guess we'll all find out.

Trap me? What is that some members only home I'm not understanding?

Regardless, thanks for the input.

I think 2019 WPA Players Championship was the last one, played on green Andy cloth before the U.S. Open.

As of right now, yes. When they first came on the scene and took some things over they had schedule conflicts with currently existing events... and still do a bit with the CSI USOPEN Stuff this time.

I know there are a ton of events and they need to work around those and the venues availability as well, as long as they do the best to avoid those and not purposefully schedule on top of them then I continue to see them as a good thing.

Not to mention, based on the Karl/Emily interview, it seems like she is really trying to do what the players/fans want in regards to equipment and rules and still create very marketable events to sponsors... unlike the Race to 4/Spot shot shootout Pred US Billiard Series which seems to be trying to market itself to major TV players more then being what the players and fans want. I think Matchroom found the happy medium.

And I love the template rack for the early rounds and hand racking by ref for the end rounds as well as increasing the race in the later rounds too. Bringing back the 1 balls on the spot and breaking from anywhere behind the line... love that stuff. Get to see the players string more packages.

Edit... not that my opinion really matters in any of this. I just like watching good pool. The Matchroom World format was just that.

For sure I think it is an exciting time to be a fan. Barry and Eddie Hearn seem to have a knack for doing things big. It also seems like putting EF in charge was a pure stroke of genius.

A couple of things I like so far...that MR is rebranding and focusing on nineball. and making it synonymous with MR pool and their great production. As they continue to refine and revise how they package their product, it will be interesting if the other 9 ball promoters fall by the wayside, try and compete with MR, or just assimilate into the MR product. I can picture a time in the future if someone thinks "9-ball", they automatically think of MR, and vice versa.

Having said that, there are some interesting things happening on this side of the pond as well. I know folks on here complain about the predator series and the short races and spot shots, but it makes for exciting finishes. A my wife and her friend actually watched much of the vegas open, specifically hoping for a match to go to spot shots. They would get so nervous for the players and they were actually engaged. I guess it is kind of like PK's is soccer. Players and die hards hate it, but many fans think it ratchets up the tension exponentially.

I would be fine if MR took the 9 ball and some of the other tourneys focused on 8 ball or 10 ball. I would love to see more 8 ball played for high stakes vs. the current 9 ball where many times after knocking 2 or 3 in on the break they are actually playing 6 or 7 ball...
