Is there a demand for trained pool referees?

I noticed that the ACS had a referee training 3 day clinic at their recent nationals event and it got me to thinking, is there even a demand for pool referees? Do these big budget production tournaments even have it in their budget to bring in someone and have their room and board covered? I've heard a lot of the people who do ref work at some of these events are volunteers but i have no idea if some of there expenses are covered to just make it there.

I do umpiring on the side and there is a huge demand for umpires by many places like little league, high school and college ball. Obviously, the more training and discipline an umpire has the more jobs we get.

If there's a shortage, this explains why.

Well I am not sure what the compensation is today, this goes back 10 years. Personally have not been to Las Vegas since 2008.

Friend who do Trade Showd there say it is very expensive to stay, eats, and do their trade show.

Attendance keeps falling because of price to do business.

Matchroom was recruiting referees a few weeks ago, although I agree with you I can't imagine there is much demand anywhere.

I think the largest demand is in the national league tournaments (and maybe regional) where there are hundreds/thousands of players and you need at least area referees. In the US, I think all of the referee training is done for that kind of tournament and usually at that kind of tournament.

At 75 who cares!

At 75 (and I am close) you no longer have to worry about the long term consequences of STDs.....
What does it really mater if the disease takes 25 years to bring you down !?!

There is no demand for refs with perhaps one exception: the US needs a head ref for major events modeled on Michaela Tabb.

Now don’t get me wrong, love Ken Schuman but he’s not exactly easy on the eyes, lol. We should have a serious no kidding female ref who looks good and knows how to do her job. If she wore white gloves that wouldn’t hurt.

You're probably getting a woody just thinking about it, aren't you?

Funny you mention Ken Schuman I have tough to my self it someone creep into my space like the guy does.

We would have words, at time he seems to invade player space.

Honestly do not understand why he does the space invasion thing.👎

That’s true. It’s very expensive

Also the internet has replaced the need to go to a trade show and search out new products. Just use Google.

As far as conferences Zoom calls have replaced them quite a bit.

Some conferences are still best in a proper conference setting.

I have a friend in the F&B dept at Mandalay Bay which is primarily a “trade show” hotel. Their attendance numbers are off 65-70% of normal. It’s bad. Same at Luxor next door.

Will the numbers ever be what they were? Unlikely is my guess. The league pool, chess players, ping pong, and other conferences will always come and get robbed by Vegas. But I just don’t seeing the annual attendance for those sorts of events ever coming back fully.

Vegas ain’t going out of biz, but it will sway away from trade shows/conventions into something new over the next 10 years. It has a way of reinventing itself.

Well Las Vegas screw over the hood thing they had going because of greed, and corporate bean counters trying to extract every dime from everyone.

Rooms use to be reasonable. Today they are not, you getting charge to park your car at hotel you are staying, plus resort fees.

Food use to be reasonable, and most place had Midnight to 6am specials that were special. Today you got restaurants, branded by Goid TV Chef, with high prices.

Friend is in Premium Cigar Business, their shoe is no
longer Cigars & Related Products. It and association is rebranded to include Pot and Vape products.

Everything from space to display, setup, take down, and seal with Unions who overcharges for everything is nuts.

So actual traffic to convention is down because Las Vegas has become expensive, and they do not care.

Last place like Arizona have Indian casinos, Sport Book a so those weekend to Las Vegas now are to
Local Indian Casino.

same problem here in germany as well-- the referee progam itself is well done. The refs are extremley well educated. But the paying? it s a joke. I myself educated (long ago) also referees in the early 90 s--- but will never do this, or even the job again. To do this job 10-12 hours is exhausting and tough ( physically and mentally).

But hey--- tell me a sport, where referees really earn good money. Usually they re just always the idiot to shout at ^^
