went book shopping recently and scored a few pool-related volumes
this is from "shooting pool" by mike shamos, with pics by george bennett
pretty neat..go fran!

How did you find forensic accountancy as a career? (I'm a regular accountant getting restless!)

It's probably as exciting as it gets if you're an accountant. Depending on the type of firm you work for, you'd could be working on cases along side of lawyers. I worked for a sole practitioner who had a forensic practice, and I interacted with lawyers a lot, and often went to court with them. My boss was always the expert witness and would testify in court with the results of our findings. I often sat next to the lawyer, feeding him questions. The great thing about it is that as forensic accountants, we're bound to the truth, regardless of whose side we're employed by.

Thanks for sharing your experiences, it does sound a lot more interesting than the average accountancy job. Would you say it's a niche skill-set, or should general accountancy skills give me a good start? (I've been in tax all my career so I don't have a strong audit / systems background, but I have a good eye for 'creative' financial arrangements!)
 
Got a question for all you accountants.
How would a great accountant answer this question from the boss?
"How much is 2 +2 ?"

Hi Fran. I drove to NY on a Sunday morning with a friend for a 2 hour lesson with you somewhere around 2000. Watched you play at the first SBE. All is good. The (pool) fun never ends.

LOL! This definitely isn't white water rafting. You would do well in that field with a tax background. Tax return analysis is a big part of that line of work. We had two tax specialists in our group. My background was auditing and write-ups, so I usually analyzed and traced transaction trails. Also, document indexing is key in this type of job because usually boxes of subpoenaed documents are dumped on your doorstep. So we all pitch in and index documents when we start a new job. Sometimes you have to travel to enemy territory to get info. They treat you like the enemy, too.

my interpretation of the "joke"
is people talk about accountants being able to manipulate the numbers draw any conclusion you want
politicians are very prone to trying to skew the data with "THEIR " interpretation of the numbers
