Strange lookin pin on kikel cue. Anybody got a clue?

I have not handled Kikel cues so I am not sure if it is a common choice on these cues.
Square threads are considered very precision as far as threads go.
 
Looks like someone tried to leverage a power transmission (Acme) thread.

Timmy Scruggs tried Acme threaded joint pin,
but Timmy said the threads could strip-stopped using acme

That's because Mr. Scruggs used a Joint screw modified to thread the shafts instead of using the 2 piece tap set for acme threads..
