Another Predator/CSI event where they can't fill the field. 42 Players, same bad format, and the nausea of watching a multi-hour Predator infomercial.

Unlike the Alberta, Canada event, this one isn't in a remote location. I've never been to Battle Creek, but it looks to be only a couple hours from a few major cities. Too bad it didn't fill. The stands are empty also from what I can tell on the stream.

These pockets aren't just loose, they are gigantic, biggest I've seen in a long time in a pro pool event. Some balls that are struck very poorly are finding the pocket. Of course, we can still expect the commentators to try to convince us that these are tough conditions at some point.

The top guys should be running a lot of racks in these extremely simple conditions. To me, it looks like the guys running ten-ball want the break and run percent to be as high as nine-ball and given the break stats we saw at the Matchroom European Open, it might just happen at the Michigan Open once we get to Stage 2 of this event. I hope not, because I think this format (two sets with spot shot shootout if needed) is just terrible.

Nonetheless, best of luck to all the fine players that are competing in this. It's nice to see superstars Gorst, Biado, Shaw, and JL Chang in the field. This field isn't deep and there's a lot of dead money, but there are enough superior cueists that Stage 2 should offer a high level of play.

I just saw that you also said 42 in another thread as well. It is 74 for the men (76 entrants but two forfeits) and 64 for the women. And the men's field includes a couple dozen very good players. Did you look at post #1 of this thread or at the bracket?

I wouldn't call 11 of the Top 50 based on Fargo (or 19 of the Top 100 based on Fargo) a particularly strong field, but it's a decent field. I don't think anybody rated under 800 has ever won one of these CSI/Predator ten-ball events, but I could be mistaken.

Still, as you said, there are plenty of GOOD players in the field, so somebody will probably surprise and go deep.

The commentators on the Rika match mentioned the pockets were 4.25 but that the cloth was slick so they were playing bigger. Are the actual specs posted anywhere?

The specs don't matter, only how the pockets play. It's all about the eye test, and these are clearly playing like buckets. I'm not saying that it's inappropriate, by the way, just that Stage 2 will bring a lot of break-and-run racks by the worthy. It should make for some exciting pool.

... I don't think anybody rated under 800 has ever won one of these CSI/Predator ten-ball events, but I could be mistaken. ...
Wu Kun Lin won the second event last year. I don't know what his FargoRate was prior to that event, but today it is just a hair under 800 at 798.

Zielinski and He are now just a bit over 800 (803 and 804, respectively), but I don't know what their ratings were just before their wins in this series. A trip back through AzB threads from the time of those events could probably tell us, but no need, as your point is certainly valid that only top-notch players have won in this series.

The lowest-rated player to have made the finals in one of these events is Bader Al Awadhi, currently at 759, which puts him out of the top 100.

Karen Corr is in the field, won her first two matches, and faces Amber Chen (winner of the recent Predator Canada Open) next.

Hey, at least they have sorted out the leveling / setup issues with these Predator tables now.

I heard the 7ft versions were also fine.

sad to see they didn't fill the field. i hope it's lesson learned this time. still fun to see chang, gorst, shaw play in any format

who cares. its still a stout field and free to watch.

yea, as fans were really spoiled nowadays with the amount of pool events going on. but obviously the players don't agree enough to fill the field. whether this is due to top heavy payouts or the format i don't know.
