Who would you like to see get chosen? I have a hunch the choice will be made after this week's International Open.

And this is a blind poll, so lurkers can vote and remain anonymous.

Billy Thorpe is the only choice. He is the strongest (current) player on the list. He gets along with everyone. He's fun to watch. Earl is clearly the best by far (in his prime) on this list, and JJ is second. But both are too old to compete with the young guns.

I'd like to see Earl win another big one. That doesn't really mean I think he should be on the team, though. As was pointed out on another thread, he hasn't been competing in a lot of tournaments. And I think there's a lot of merit to the idea of getting a player from the next generation on board.

I voted for Jeremy Jones as a playing captain, but some have said he publicly stated on a podcast that he does not want to shoot as a player. I'm now leaning to change my vote to Earl or Shane Wolford. Shane Wolford's enthusiasm and amiable personality will complement the spirt of team play. Earl being Earl, though, is a draw, and love him or hate him—and many have stated, and continue to state ad nauseum, their hatred of Earl—he is a living legend, has the experience, and still has game.

For me as an American pool enthusiast, it is sad that the existing lot of professional-caliber players in USA is so small. Look at the minute amount of names in this pool poll. It speaks volumes about the state of American professional pool.

Matchroom is trying to create a global tour of events, which will help increase pool's popularity overseas and in Europe. But if America does not get more skin in the game, professional pool in USA will continue to circle the drain.

On a hopeful note, Mike Panozzo, publisher of Billiards Digest, wrote this about American pool in the October edition: "American talent isn’t dominating fields like it once did. But don’t kid yourself, America is still king in pool, if only geographically. Every player in the world still considers the U.S. the place to go for tournaments, action and learning. And every promoter in the world dreams of conquering the U.S. market above all others."

After the Shaw selection, Earl is the obvious choice here.

Why after the Shaw selection?

Shaw is 12th on MR's rankings and was MVP in the last two Mosconi Cups.

Shaw's selection makes perfect sense. Earl's would not, unless MR is feeling sorry after he wasn't able to take advantage of the handout they gave him last year.

It's an uphill battle no matter who the US' last pick ends being, but we might as well hand the trophy to Europe now if it ends up being Earl.

Did the final U.S.A. player get picked?
No. I have a feeling Jeremy Jones will wait until after the International Open 9-Ball this week.

After the surge of discontent in Team Europe's recent wildcard choice, I wouldn't want to be in Jeremy's shoes.

This Mosconi Cup team business is a tough racket. Since its genesis, the Mosconi Cup has been the jubilee event of each year and the dream of every single professional player to be a part of it.

I wish there were more events like the Mosconi Cup that would generate this kind of excitement.

Very true. Yeah I saw all the hoopla on FB and figured the last U.S.A. player was announced. But it seems only the EU fans are whining:)

Agree wish there were more exciting events. However I wonder if more would dilute the fan experience. For example as a fan I’m pooled out right now, and not even following the international open.

I like that the crowd is rowdy. I don't actually want that for every event, but If we want this to be a spectator sport then we need to have the spectators enjoy themselves, not pretend they are in a library. It would be cool to have a North and South American series. It's strange how little the top US athletes compete internationally, All our biggest sports are pretty much US an maybe a Canadian or two. A lot of that is due to our size and location.
