I voted for Jeremy Jones as a playing captain, but some have said he publicly stated on a podcast that he does not want to shoot as a player. I'm now leaning to change my vote to Earl or Shane Wolford. Shane Wolford's enthusiasm and amiable personality will complement the spirt of team play. Earl being Earl, though, is a draw, and love him or hate him—and many have stated,
and continue to state ad nauseum, their hatred of Earl—he is a living legend, has the experience, and still has game.
For me as an American pool enthusiast, it is sad that the existing lot of professional-caliber players in USA is so small. Look at the minute amount of names in this pool poll. It speaks volumes about the state of American professional pool.
Matchroom is trying to create a global tour of events, which will help increase pool's popularity overseas and in Europe. But if America does not get more skin in the game, professional pool in USA will continue to circle the drain.
On a hopeful note, Mike Panozzo, publisher of
Billiards Digest, wrote this about American pool in the October edition:
"American talent isn’t dominating fields like it once did. But don’t kid yourself, America is still king in pool, if only geographically. Every player in the world still considers the U.S. the place to go for tournaments, action and learning. And every promoter in the world dreams of conquering the U.S. market above all others."
