CNC cuemaking

Hey there... I've been making cues for... well not very long. I've made 3-4 total and they've come out okay.. especially for not really knowing what I'm doing! Anyways, I've decided I like doing it and want to invest some more time into it. I have a CNC that I'm learning how to use. Thus far I've been modeling with Fusion 360 and I can do pretty basic stuff. I guess my question is... do any cuemakers here use a traditional generic CNC with a 4th axis for cuemaking? Or does it pretty much require a CNC setup specifically to do cues? I'm looking to at least CNC the inlays, but preferably points as well.

I've been able to setup the CNC and jog it around manually and cut some forearm points, but have had some trouble figuring out how to generate the proper G-code to rotate the cue and cut the points and such completely automated. I guess I'm looking for any kind of CNC input anyone has really... best program to use -- best Gcode compiler -- if I need to get a CNC specifically for cuemaking, which do you suggest (Unique?) -- as well as anything else you'd like to add that could help.

Thanks a lot.

I use Cut2D to produce the g-code. It is very easy to use.

I index cuts using the MDI, something like G1 A90. After cut, zero A axis then index again.

It is easy to write a simple subroutine then cut and paste the g-code for the cut into the subroutine, but I am usually too lazy for a single cue.

PM me if you need help.

It's not so much the CNC that needs modification per se but the jig holding the cue. I recently upgraded from Cut2D to V carve and was pleasantly surprised how easy it was as the two programs function virtually identically in designing and the 4th axis adds a lot of possibilities with the ability to rotate the cue under your cutting.

Does VCarve wrap?
Does it allow for cylinder work pieces?

Joey,
Yes. Here are examples from

You can download fully functional unlimited trial versions - but you can't save out the toolpaths. There are free example toolpaths that you can download to test on your machine.
