Quitting Winners Question

I preface with how many games I have time for. Just went out to pick up food last night. Stopped at a local bar for a quick game nearby. Got on a table and a patron asked if I wanted to play, I said sure how about 20 a game, but I only have time for a couple racks. He says ok let's play for 10. I let him pick the rules and break. He says scratches behind the head string. I win the first game, he says double or nothing, sure. Second game comes down to my 2 balls each I scratch off an unlucky carom. My 9 is left and he had two solids. Takes ball in hand to shoot MY 9 with easy position on the 8. I mentioned that we were playing in the kitchen. He says no, I already scratched in the first game and played from the head string ... ok whatever. He shoots my 9, and leaves straight in on the 8. I say that was my ball. And shoot the 8 for the win.

I collect 20 and he wants to play again. Sorry, got to run. Told him I have an order that's ready... bye-bye

I would make a note not to play your opponent again. I let the other player make the rules but then we both played by them. I didn't let them change the rules as they went along.

i tend to let my opponent do whatever he wants to me as long as i keep way the best of it. within reason. he is happy and i keep winning.
i am not gambling against that person. i am gambling against what that person is presenting me with.

No hopers could do about anything, like you I didn't care. Getting away with cheating helped keep them at the table, no different than stalling a bit. I even had people go so far as to move balls when I stepped away from the table. They didn't realize I had kept in mind what cleared and what didn't since the opening break and when a certain layout was disturbed.

Minor cheats were ignored but when they moved into the level of moving balls I often retaliated just on general principals. I might not need to cheat but I certainly could! My left hand made many a ball when I was shooting right handed!(grin) Untying balls that they had tied up moving the balls by hand was good fun too. What could they do when I made the shot? Protest that I had moved the same balls they moved?

Cheating with the cheaters was good fun as long as the stakes were small. I wasn't as tolerant when larger stakes were involved.

Should Fast Eddie have quit after beating Fats out of over 10 (?) grand? (100K in today’s money). After playing all day & all night, dead on his feet and drunk with glory (and whisky), was definitely the time to leave (IMHO). How much more would getting Fats to cry uncle really be worth? Only a ‘born loser’ would stay and lose it all back.
The game wasn’t over until Fats said it was over.

He asked Fats, the game wasn’t over.

He got punished for drinking and was outlasted by a marathon player. I’ve seen that in real life many times. You are responsible for managing your own game. Fats out managed him.

Fatboy <———not a marathon player and manages his action accordingly
