don't have easy access to a 9 ft. table, but am thinking about the future
I'm short (5'6"), can go behind the back and am ok using the bridge
but I'd like to be able to stretch out without the extras..how long's good?
(edit: I mean total cue length, including extension..)

58” cue is all you require but if you are concerned, consider adding an extension.
Because you don’t need it for most shots, I’d recommend the type that screws into
your cue butt instead of the cue joint. Personally, I use a Tony Ryan 12” and 18” oak
extender that slips on your cue’s butt. I prefer using it over a cue bridge and the oak
handle makes it feel more like the butt of a cue. Hager also made one that telescoped
but the Tony Ryan version feels more like a pool cue butt. But a 58” cue is all you need.

Anything longer than a 12 inch extension is not worth having, as it will end up being over 3 feet from your bridge hand to the cue tip. At that point, it’s far easier to use a bridge.

If you want to reach all shots without a bridge, then about 70 inches. Guaranteed to be unstable.

Personally, an 8-inch extension on the butt makes my cue feel so much different that it doesn't work well for me except for the simplest shots.

thanks for the replies- exactly the kind of info. I was seeking.

sort of a silly addendum, but I'm now wondering how long a cue should be to reach all shots with a bridge (9 ft.)?

It’s rare than you ever need more than a standard length bridge because you can hold the butt of the bridge stick out in front of you. A 12 inch extension, which totals a 70 inch cue should allow you to reach virtually all shots with a bridge, as you can also hold the butt of your cue out in front of you.

Biloxi makes a good point. I often practice using alternate hand shooting & it helps develop your feel for the stroke.
It’s all about rhythm and going straight forward through the cue ball and don’t quit on the stroke opposite handed.

I think you’re looking for problems that don’t exist….I could come up with a lot of world titles that belong to not just pool players but also 6x12 players who are or were shorter than you….some substantially.
Just get a short extension and you’ll have most bases covered.

I am 6'2",my cue is 61 1/2'. 32" butt 29 1/2" shafts I can reach most shot, left handed also. Still need the bridge sometime. Just the way it is. 💪

5.7 and 1/2" on a good day. Use a 58". Grew up playing snooker (57"). Got handy with the bridge. I have a slip on extension but always just grab the bridge. When I got the US and someone sees me use it and draw back 4 feet they look at me like a had a 3rd eye.

I'm only 5'8"and realized a long time ago that the better you use the cue ball the less you need a bridge.

It will not solve all problems, but start shooting with your other hand. Feels awkward at first, but after time you can even draw.
Ronnie O'Sullivan and Efren shoot seamlessly with the other hand. I see more of the snooker players moving in that direction. It really is worth the effort.

I use a 59" cue, 30" butt, 29" shaft, and recently got an 8 inch screw-in extention for it that does help a lot. There were a few shots that I used it for that were pocketed much easier than if I stretched more or used a bridge. Of course a 60" or longer cue will help even more to reach longer shots but I find any shaft over 29 or 29.5 inches does weird things to my shooting.

It's like the answer Abe Lincoln (probably not really him) gave when asked how long a man's legs should be?

Long enough to reach the ground.

I don't think an extra inch or two is going to make or break reachability for someone struggling. Short arm guys need to master the bridge.

I think the best example I've seen of that is when a 5'0" beginning league player gets fitted by helpful friends with a 60-inch cue so they can reach more shots -- and hit all of them worse.
