Boring Pool USA ...

Is pool so boring in the USA we need a mascot to keep the crowd unruly ? Do I see the second or third row looking like Andy of Mayberrys' bunch in church ? ... Guy

I don't find US pool boring at all. There a lot of very good regional stars out there. Just because they don't play absolute world-class pool doesn't make watching them any less fun. I know a lot of players that play 650+FR pool and let me tell you they can gin it. Also most of them support their pool with this thing called a JOB. We have a local guy, John Gabriel, that runs a landscape biz and is also 720ishFR. He beat AlexP. at DerbyCity once playing 1p. Not too boring.

John is up to 740 and looks to be in great form these days. He should make a run at it. He fights like a dog!

Good guy too. I've known him 25yrs and he's put in the time/effort. Might be the best in the US that has full-time day job.

Pool is boring when you are not watching the best players, which is the problem with US pool. We have had 1 player in the last 10 years who could compete internationally.
To me, perfect pool is more boring than games where the players have to work for it, fix getting out of line, play safe, etc. Break and run, over and over, that gets boring pretty quickly for me to watch. Some break and runs, mixed in with getting out of trouble once in a while, that's the best combination for me to watch.

Darn right, and if we can one day get rid of pool's official mistake-forgiver, the jump cue, players will have to deal with trouble far more often and the game will become more interesting to watch.

Stay with alternate break, ban the jump cue except on the first shot of an inning, and lose the template in everything but rack your own events, and the game will become much closer to the game that you and I would rather watch.

Stu I just , well the last day or so watched a podcast with Jayson and Mark , Action- Report, I think it was 226, anyhow this was 2005, sure don't seem wright, almost twenty years ago, gest was Archer and he made note several times, watching pool games boring... Also Jayson made a comment that in order for pool to go forward and advance that pro and amateur would have to separate, In the last almost twenty years we have had cities on this earth build thousands of skyscrapers, My question is, Why in our USA are we so judgemental of all our great players ? , They are all that we have... This judgment doesn't seem to help the new viewers ... Guy

100% agree on getting rid of that dam jump stick

In what sport are fans not judgmental of the best players? It's what they do.

As for US pool players alone, we no longer need to opine on which players are making the grade. According to Fargo, just two of the world's top 30 players are American. Just two of the Top 50 in the Matchroom World 9-ball rankings are American. Nine ball is a game developed in America, and not that long ago, more than half of the top 50 nine ball players in the world were American. We may have as many nine ball players in America as all European countries combined, and yet they are schooling us consistently.

We root hard for our American players. The buzz is second to none at the Mosconi. Still, as you suggest, we're judgmental. It's mostly a matter of pride, for most of us feel we can do better. I'll always root hard for emerging American players but won't be delusional about the level of their accomplishments.

Pool is one of those games that you watch the major events for the pro side. Kind of like golf. Also, the game has very much turned the page to being more of an international game compared to when everyone thought only the philipinos and Americans would win everything.

But like someone else has said, I'm sure there are plenty of players in the 700-760 Fargo range that just do not bother with the pro side of things. Remember, pool money is still nothing even with Matchroom turning it up within the last two years or so.

Remember this Stu, Earl could have been a wrestler...

I don’t know what it is, I love watching pool, but most don’t. I’ve had serious players over to the house for a night of pool, have many championship games recorded , but they always want to watch golf, basketball or anything but pool. They love pool, sometimes leave when the sun comes up but they won’t watch it

As much as I love playing, watching it is a different matter. I'll watch 1pkt when in the mood in the hopes of picking up some tips or tricks but let's face it , pool isn't very spectator friendly. For a variety of reasons.

John is a pretty cool dude.. Wish I didn't live on the other side of the state.

Mike would disagree.

Absolutely agree about the jump cue, and that goes for the jump shot as well. I don't think I've ever seen Efren do a jump shot yet he was fascinating to watch as he kicked out of his problems.
