What Is Up With Master Chalk?

For what it's worth, I wound up with a counterfeit Aramith cue ball through Amazon last year. Amazon doesn't check their products and anyone can claim to sell something authentic by inputting the correct ASIN.

I too have noticed some super dusty MC lately. Has anyone called Tweeten and asked Skip what's up? May try msg'ing and see what they say.

The local Legion got a bunch of green Felson chalk , it's the dirtiest stuff I have ever seen. I've been debating on buying them some Masters to replace it.

Been a fan Master for years and have had no interest in all the newer chalks.

For quite a while now I have bought the occasional box and take a few new pieces with me to the pool hall or tournament in a pouch. Very recently I bought another box. The first thing I noticed about the chalk cubes in this new box was that the holes in the chalk were drilled/formed a bit deeper than previously. No biggie. But now, having gone though over a dozen pieces, I can tell that, at least from the box I got, the chalk is a different, *much* softer formulation. I mean, I could probably go through a cube of this newer chalk in one extended session of four to six hours.

And my hands.

After just a couple of hours, my chalking hand is blue -- really blue. If I play for four hours or longer, we're talking Smurf hand. I can't imagine how much chalk is landing on the cloth. Anyone else?

two hours play
Lou,
I started using RMC (Russian Magic Chalk) some years back. While the name is a little corny, It really is a pretty damn good product for the money.
😎

Lou,

Looking at the images, some of the chalk looks to have a cut dimple, some seems to have a pressed in dimple.

If you decide it is just poor quality but not a safety hazard and not worth the bother of shipping back I recommend four hours or so in the oven at 185-200 then leave in the oven to cool overnight. When I tried this with some Master Blue Flag chalk it changed to be more like Master Green chalk which has always seemed a little dustier than the blue to me. While all of the Master chalk starts off the same, different dyes seem to give different colors slightly different properties. My opinion anyway.

Sounds like a knock off got you. It's so inexpensive as it is, why not buy from a reputable source like Seybert's or Pool Dawg?

Not sure why they are 40% more than Seybert's.

Here's the seller information from Amazon for "Y2Play". Perhaps you can get a refund. It seems odd to me a music store is selling pool chalk.

Well, first off, it has not been established that I got a knock-off box of Master chalk.

IOWs, if Tweeten has just tweaked the formulation, it doesn't matter what the source is.

Second, chalk, to me, is just a simple commodity that, to date, hasn't required trusted sources and serial numbers of the cubes of chalk. Besides, buying through Amazon as a Prime member, should I file a claim, I'll either get a refund or I'm out less than I might bet on a game of 1pocket. No biggie.

At this stage of the game I'm just curious if others have noted a change.

I am feeling more confident that you got a counterfeit box. The reason why I’m leaning this way is that while I agree, Master chalk is typically inexpensive, this would be so easy and cheap to knock off it would be like free money for them. They could use something like wallboard compound tinted blue, amazingly cheap and easy peasey.

Added to this is your purchase source is suspect. An individual or a random unknown company on Amazon is exactly the kind of setting where knockoff products are plentiful.

How many times I’ve heard people complain about the poor performance their kamui tip provided them and when asked where they got it it was ebay or Amazon or similar. Unless you purchased from an authorized dealer, you are gambling!!!

I remember right after hurricane katrina there was a major shortage of sheetrock needed to rebuild and what was available was going for crazy high money then like magic sheetrock began showing up from China in huge quantities and for just 8 bucks or so per sheet. Consumers gobbled them up and Louisiana, Mississippi, and a few other surrounding states began the process of rebuilding. Fast forward a few months and the terrible reality started to show its very ugly head. Some of you may recall, “toxic sheetrock” from China where after installation people began getting sick, copper pipes in these homes sprang leaks, even some reports of jewelery left on night stands would oxidize overnight while sleeping. Wtf!

Lou, if I were you I definitely wouldn’t let that shit get anywhere near my skin again.

best,
brian kc

Good thought, Brian.

And fortunately, I have a small box of Master that I know to be legit that was given to be as a gift a year ago by a friend of Gail's. So for now I'll wait and see what I get from Hawley's via Amazon.

This is the color difference I was talking about, Lou

Right.

So here's the chalk I have. On the left is a one year old cube and on the right the chalk I just received. Besides a slight difference in color, and depth of hole, the obvious difference is the amount of chalk on the wrappers straight out of the box.

Lou, I think you are right on. Rusty's had a brand new gross box of chalk sitting out on Tuesday. I thought they looked a little deep.

Yesterday, I played my weekly game in Dallas with all new blue Masters chalk. From 3:30 till about 11:10, used about 5 or 6 cubes. I

do not like deep holes in my chalk, so I kept getting chalk off next table (players quit). I was thinking that the chalk was not lasting very long.

My hands are always blue after playing. I used to not wash my hands after playing when I was younger. Wanted to assyre my wife I had been

playing pool.:ROFLMAO: Joke, sort of. Nearly been married 51 years.

lol, same trick here.

Interesting idea , Hu.

But I guess I don't care that much about saving the box. At this point I'm just interested in seeing what's in the new box.

3 months ago I bought a new magnetic chalk holder, in order to get free shipping I had to spend an extra $10 dollars so I took the plunge and bought a round of the Taom v10, cost me $20.00 but but at least I would know if all the claims made about it were true, first impression was that's a big hole in the center of that chalk, no way that's gonna last, 3 months later doesn't look any different than the first day I used it, the tip holds this chalk a little bit better but not $20 worth, you don't have to chalk every shot but that's part of my pre-shot routine any way, but it is WAY cleaner, I noticed there is no or little chalk dust on the cue ball, is that worth it? If this chalk lasts for a year and retains it's current properties I would say yes, I can almost guarantee you will blow more money than this on something pool related that doesn't work, by the way the chalk holder came with a holder for both standard chalk and the Toam, How often does a pool player get a win-win?

I also chalk before every shot as part of my PSR so I have to wonder how long something like Taom would last me -- two cubes almost equal the price of a gross of Master.

I bought a gross of Masters Chalk about 20 years ago. Still have 4 boxes left. It is much cleaner than the pictures you posted. Something must have changed, or someone is folding the market with counterfeit garbage. Either way is not good. :(

Well that I know about, so I always take care when I'm buying CBs.

I think your hand got blue like that from the cloth being dirty and full of chalk not from a chalk being too soft. Even if i tried very hard i don’t think i could get it on the palm of my hand just by chalking the tip.
