FYI, I just posted a new video that looks at massé shot physics and discusses cue and tip differences and example shots. The shots were executed by Florian “Venom” Kohler and recorded in super slow motion by Pubo Huang:

Contents:
0:00 - Intro
0:17 - Example
1:25 - Cue and Tip Comparison
---- 2:16 - super slow motion
3:44 - Trick Shot
5:05 - Wrap Up

As always, I look forward to your feedback, comments, questions, complaints, and requests.

Enjoy!

Awesome. When the Elk Master tip was installed, was it left at full length or cut down some? Was anything special done to make the tip effective? Did it take long to break in for full effectiveness? What was the diameter?
Thanks again for such a professional production.

Those are question better addressed to Florian, but I don't think any of that really matters much to him. He can hit masse shots well with almost anything. I had him use my Predator BK Rush break cue with the BK Hybrid tip, and he did fine. Ask I mentioned in the video, the tip diameter on his masse cue is 14mm.

Is there a maximum and minimum effective range for masse shots?

great video as always dr dave
i have always been intrigued by masse shots
i hope in future videos you can show a coriolis diagram superimposed somehow showing how the masse shot was aimed

Sorry, but you need to be more specific. Cue weight, tip hardness, cue elevation, amount of curve, shot speed, number of rails, something else???

Me too.

I will cover everything about technique and aiming in a future video. Although, Venom doesn't use any systems to aim these. Like most things at the top level, it is done mostly by "feel" (based on experience and intuition built up from countless hours of smart and successful practice).

Thanks.

but since corolis diagrams are often shown (i dont completely understand them)
maybe you can use them as a guide for us newbies to masse ...;)

The situation with CB and OB nearly but not frozen, shot is to play a masse around the OB. If the OB was not there it would be a straight in shot.

Is there a minimum distance between CB and OB required for masse in the above situation?

I don't think so. Venom could easily curve around a frozen OB.

Can masse shots have additional effects?

Like masse follow, masse draw or masse stun?

Thanks for having office hours DrDave.

Hey Joe, I can answer the rest of the questions. A lot of us Trick Shot players use elk master for the masse cue. I used one until I got sponsored by Navigator. The tip I use now is still a super soft tip. The elkmaster tip is not cut down and nothing special was done to it. I am friends with Florian and his tip repair guy and I know he doesn't do anything special to it. If you practice masse a lot, it will mushroom those tips quick. There really is no "break in time" for this. When I had the navigator tip installed on my masse cue, I hit a really cool vertical masse with the first swing using that tip.

Hope this helped!
