Predator WPA World 8 Ball Championship 2023 (17-22 Oct 2023), Austria, Winner $75K

Actually there are 3 Main tournaments, but Juniors play in 3 different divisions U17, U19 and Girls. So basically like running 5 different tournaments at the same time.
Still, they made it stretched out mercilessly in time
All the best,
Kris

gotcha. i guess that will clog up tables and streaming. i get why it's good and all that but maybe they should stream only the junior final on youtube and have the rest on kazoom..

Umm no. Good rotation players always play good 8 ball but it doesn’t work the other way a round. You’ll see the guys who play nothing but 8 ball show up for a 9 ball tournament and be out quick. But the good rotation players show up in the 8 ball tournaments and it’s business as usual. They are still in the money or winning it. You can be average at position and if you’re good at seeing the pattern you’ll play good 8 ball. . 8 ball is about patience and finding the path of least resistance. I know from personal experience. I was that guy. I had to really put time into position play and understanding the rails that I didn’t need to be a good 8 ball player when I started playing nothing but 9 ball. I wasn’t any where near as good as I thought I was . Look at apa lol all 9s in 9 ball are 7s in 8 ball But it’s not even close to being the other way around.
The problem to me is 8 ball is suited for bar box pool. Balls cluster up and then the chess that is 8 ball comes into play more. On A 9 foot table everything is pretty much open and for The best in the world its just child play to make the balls in any order they want. maybe you could make it a little harder by the table not being open to choice after the break 🤷‍♂️ but these rules make it a snooze fest.

Pro's are pro's. They are going to be pro at pretty much any discipline. That's why people like filler, Gorst, and SVB to some degree can become great at 1 pocket so quickly and beat those 1 pocket "specialist" that have been playing it for most of their lives. There are very few strict "specialist" at the pro level...even T-rex has his hands full at 1 pocket with the top pros...

Not so the case for the rest of us pool mortals.

Maybe i'm an exception...(9/6 APA), but I regularly do much better in our local 9 ball tourneys than 8 ball. I play almost entirely on 7 footers, 9 ball is an easier game. Either you have a shot on the ball you are required to hit, or you have many options to hide either the cue-ball, object ball, or both...or you can simply add distance or tough angles to increase your opponents shot difficulty. If all else fails, "get'em rollin'" with the classic hit and hope.

Not that I agree with scheduling, though it seems made on purpose to maintain higher number of viewers locally. If Mens finished, guess some may have lost compeltely interest to show up and watch live. Some spectators may show up earlier to watch juniors match, and wait for Ladies 10 Ball or Mens matches.
Just a lucky guess...
best,
kris

Who knows, SVB, Gorst, Filler and others who have had rigorous schedules over the past month might be welcoming a "slower schedule."
Yes, that's a good point. WPA has certainly become the symbol of competing less often and has ensured that there will be more down time for the players next year.

Are the people bashing this even watching any of the matches? It’s not a snooze fest, it’s not a BnR fest, it’s some of the best in the world, showing their skills. 2nd to last rack, Albin has one stripe to open up the eight. It is covered by four solids. He gets there right away, but doesn’t quite like it. He sinks three more balls, and makes a beautiful shot. He moved all four solids and never touched the eight. It was a great sequence!
Couldn't agree more. Watching those four solids open up like a blooming flower was impressive. I remember some 9 ball fans on here talking about how exciting winner- breaks is, and how stringing big packages together makes 9 ball exciting....but if it's 8 ball, it's because the game is too easy.

I think it just boils down to some folks have a preference and a favorite game and want to promote/defend it. It's all good. Let Predator have the 8 and 10 ball events and let MR stick to their nineball. As long as we get top quality pool, I'll watch. (Except for 1 pocket...I ain't that much of a masochist:ROFLMAO:)

Yes indeed - just watched it, here's that shot:

You see that type of shot in straight pool; not so much in 9 ball. And yes, it's worth rewinding a bit and watching the game from the start.

I’ll disagree with one direction this thread has taken of “8 ball is a better game on 7’ tables”.

It’s equally boring to watch on both sizes imo.

It’s harder to play on a 9’ imo.

These are my opinions and I’m sticking to them:)
I would agree with that if the tables and balls are good. If not, a 7 footer becomes more difficult. imo

i wouldn't say boring by default, but it's too easy for them on soft tables and choose your suit rules. we don't see many misses, or safeties, just dry breaks. And the dry breaks are almost always due to slugs, which in turn are mostly due to an inferior product. the refs are competent and experienced.

I don't play poker, but I think what they're doing here is called "slow playing it" in poker.

Six days to play a 96-player event is just plain ridiculous, and it certainly increases the total expenses of the players.
I agree that the pace of this tournament is quite slow. Makes it hard as a fan to get into it and stay invested. It's very easy to wander off to other things in my life. The players might appreciate it, though.

One nitpick--slow-playing in poker is when someone under bets their hand early to disguise their strength and to let others catch up and get more invested in a losing hand. It's a trapping maneuver. It has nothing to do with slowing down the actual pace of play.

They need to play by biker-bar rules. ;)
I was playing some guy in a bar in Florida many moons ago and he was getting pretty antsy slamming the cue and swinging it like a bat. It sounded like he was starting to sharpen the toe caps on his cowboy boots everytime I was at the table. I thought I'd better let him win his money back and get the hell outta there.

I agree. We have one big 7ft tournament happening in Finland every year(Diamonds). There is multiple tournaments and it will be 4 days. One year 8-ball was one and i won tournament with only run outs and clearances(alternative breaks). Every match i made only run outs from breaks and ran table when always when got in on opponents breaks. Not a single dry break, miss or safety. TPA 1000 Tournament. Not happening in 9footets.

Wow, Filler and Chang fall, a little surprising. Although, elite pros playing 8 ball on 9'ers is really a break contest.
So far watching many matches, the pattern play has been awful, guys really relying on perfect cue ball position. It's interesting how shots are being missed that these guys would never miss playing 9 ball... any who...
Tomorrow's matches should be a treat!

I can’t fathom what that reason is other than OCD interpretations of the rules. Like what value, intent or purpose is behind that?
I learnt that the regulation at this event is the following: referee places a cueball for a lag nad players can not reposition them. Maybe they can make a request if needed but I'm not sure about this. Anyway referees are supposed to inform players on that ruling beforehand.
Therefore, must have been some miscommunication or misunderstanding.

the Chinese 8-ball cueists are most impressive, but I find it hard to watch and wonder whether it will ever find popularity outside of Asia.
It already has Stu. So many pool pros travelling to China for "heyball" events. There are also two branches competing, JOY (promoters) and CBSA (official federation). The latter recently increased the number of their major events, inviting foreigners, to four. Visiting players get their travel expenses covered (within a certain limit) and accommodation also. Some benefits for those who qualify to main stages also.

Ah, the things I learn by posting on AZ. I usually watch poker just once a year, during the final table of the WSOP main event. I remembered hearing the term to "slow play it". Now I know what it means. My bad!

True. I remember a World Cup of Pool event where Malta was a last minute entry and Tony Drago brought the Malta National 8 Ball Champion and that kid was completely lost on what to do when it came to 9 ball.
That's only because they play tiny English pool there, so the kid must have been lost over the totally new equipment.
