Entry refusal

Not sure how I feel about this... There are players in this tournament that I’ve played previously, and I would say are a pretty similar speed to myself… But this guy refused my participation…
Trying to decide whether this is just racism, and a polite way to say it’s not a foreigner friendly situation/event, or whether he has just taken some of the ‘highlights reel’ videos from my WeChat and greatly overestimated me…
Was trying to play some competitive games before heading back home for a holiday… but guess it’s straight back to getting battered by father on the green beize…
Has anyone else had similar happen to them before? Kind of curious about any stories of entry refusal you may have :)

It is annoying when you disagree with his position but that is what it is.

You could certainly say which players you think are equal or better than you and hope it changes his position...but it might change his position on the other players instead

Is his determination on players' levels base on any true measures, other than his eyes and ears?

I asked him about his determination of level - which he replied with an answer in line with other tournament organizers here (which made me a little annoyed, as like you said this could cause others an issue. I had a better window to reference other players of similar standing as a result of his reply, some of whom are my friends… and to avoid loss of face, he’d probably exclude them too, rather than make an exception and include me).
I just politely offered to play him personally at another time. Couldn’t be bothered to make it into anything that could leave a bad feeling. Just felt a little confused by it, and wasn’t really sure how to take it.
It’s often a guessing game what people really mean with their words.
Thanks for your thoughts.

Another reason why I appreciate fargo...
I guess it does have its uses… lol
I do think they are making some efforts to incorporate this here into some events in the future.
I’ve heard a few people chattering about it (or being interested in their own ratings).
There was no real interest at all during Covid/travel restricted times

What are the races involved, yours and theirs?

I live in China, sometimes things aren’t always so ‘foreigner friendly’ (don’t think my race comes into it in the conventional sense, ‘foreigner’ is the issue more than a specific Identity) - I didn’t want to push all that hard, as some friends who are a similar speed to me who entered. I don’t want to cause anyone an issue. Just wanted to play a competitive game before going home, away from American tables for a month or so.
I just asked the guy if he wanted to play me sometime and assess for himself.
Never been excluded from anything before, so was trying to figure it out.

I sense a tinge of racism. It may not be a matter of them worried about you lapping the field, but the threat of you placing may still be a problem.

if your playing same speed as every one else, its very strange. you done nothing wrong. Must just be a thing for locals.
Not that you wouldn't consider yourself a, local to the area.

Somebody in this thread mentioned FargoRate….seems that would solve the problem.

maybe not racism. those in the minority always think its that.
maybe he was told or saw what you previously did that you were too good, or he didnt want the money to go out of town. it was his tournament and local money i guess, and his choice, not yours.

maybe not you but many or most better players think they have some kind of right to get in local tournaments and take off the money.

Yeah, my initial thoughts were that. Racism presented in the friendly way of a compliment…

Seems suspicious but unless you can somehow change their minds about it, take it as a compliment, and forget about it.
This is my attitude. I would like to play and get as much experience playing as I can in tournament play of any kind. I offered to play the host, stating then he can make an assessment himself and hope that works. Cause it would also be nice to find another place to play with American tables in the city.

I see some of the players competing as roughly equal to my speed, have played a few before and thought it would be a fun challenge. I would be more likely to place than in some of the other tournaments here that’s certain (I see it as a privilege to have had opportunity to have played in tournaments that have involved world class players).
I’m not saying it’s racism to me specifically, but an anti-foreigner (anti-difference) sentiment that sometimes exists here within certain contexts.

Absolutely. I’m not sure on the ins and outs of Fargo, but I do think a better and more generalized assessment of ability would have given me a better chance of involvement (or ability to argue the case without putting some others chances of participation needlessly in jeopardy)

There’s three or four players that I’d played previously. One of them I consider a friend (as much as language barrier allows - we have played a few small money sets and share a few drinks, ciggies etc)
I could never be considered ‘local’ but certainly know, and am known in the area. I think he is wanting to encourage the local scene, but perhaps not in the most thoughtful way (or a way I see as positive/or positive to me)
