Foul, or just rude? Or am I a nit?

Your opponent gets decent shape shot on his last shot, but has to roll the cue ball over the template to get to the object ball. Instead of moving the template to the rail, he moves it over just enough to be out of his shot.

Something about that rankled me. You could just as easily set your phone, or your chalk, or drink or whatever on the playing surface and be cocky about knowing that you won't hit it. It's like touching the cue ball before it stops rolling because you "know it's not going to hit anything".

wth is rankled?
i dont speak nit

Rulebook needs clarification for errors and failure to comply.

Penalty for a nit error can be minimum like ignore it or maximum like forfeit of rack.

Create an actual punishment system in the rulebook for repeat offenders.

Both nits for nit talking about it.

ran·kle
verb

past tense: rankled; past participle: rankled
  1. (of a comment, event, or fact) cause annoyance or resentment that persists."the casual manner of his dismissal still rankles"
  2. (of a pool player) cause undue annoyance with an innocent, common, and neutral action that bothers only one or maybe two players in the world (see loggerhead12)

So after his shot, did he just leave it there? It’s certainly not a foul, but does seem a little strange / lazy. I guess he just assumed you’d take it off the table when it’s your turn if it bothered you? I wouldn’t worry about it but I would have said to him “If you’re going to move it, why not just take it off the table either before or after your shot?” Just seems like the courteous thing to do.

Why are you not worried about a template being on the table when it's where it normally is, but are worried about some other spot on the table?

Nit.

That's a great question. There are two kinds of players, those who are OCD about removing the template and those who ignore it, like SVB. I do tend to ignore it if it's on the spot.

We have that in common, me and SVB. That's about it, though.

To greatly reduce the chances of 'accidental nittiness' try ditching that racking thingy. Use a REAL rack to rack the balls. There. Nittiness erased.

The same kind of guy, though, would lay the rack on the spot before his last shot.
