Alerts Re New Threads

Recently I began getting alerts as to new threads being started. Not all threads -- just random subjects by random folks.
Did I unintentionally click on something?
Can I make it stop?
Can anyone make it stop?
Please help me. I feel as though I am losing control . . .

Click on your name at the top of the screen, then on "Account Details", then check things like "Bookmarks", "Preferences", "Following". Try unselecting something that might be causing the notifications.
