Perhaps this has been addressed.

I've tried it ... has helped me.

can help some for whatever reason but gets in the way on many shots so you have to be good with both ways.
most things are mental and go away after a while if you dont get dependent on them.
 
It’s common. The more stable the setup, the more consistent the stroke. If placing a forearm, elbow or heel of the hand on the table improves your stability, do it. If it is awkward enough to hinder your stability or stroke, don’t do it. Doesn’t take much practice to learn “when to” and “when not to”.

What he said. I’ve heard that very same advice / opinion from a pro player.
 
Yes, it's similar to why many people prefer to have a wider stance -- to have more balance. It's easier to stay relaxed and shoot straighter when your body doesn't sway at all.
