Hotel evacuation was the way in NOLA for many years. It worked well.

Watching some of these earth cams from some of the areas in the path. Really scarry, people out taking pictures like a normal day.
 
What I have not seen on tv is evacuation transportation being provided for lower income residents. Gonna be the New Orleans Plan and we'll pick up the survivors from rooftops afterwards? Where are the school buses? Oops, I forgot -- no such folks live in coastal Florida. But what about elderly and handicapped folks?

I saw where some hospitals were being evaced. Tampa Hospital with the "water fence" cited as having patients too serious to move, but that fence worries the @#%! out of me.
 
i am in vero beach on the east coast of fl
i usually am the first to leave when a hurricane is coming
this time all the reports said we would get tropical storm at worst winds
so i decided to stay
now i am getting mixed messages the tv weather stations make it sound like there could be greater than 75 (cat 1) mph wind gusts
yet several weather apps show 60 ish as max gusts
big difference
too late to leave
never again will i stay if its "iffy"

There are 2 issues to staying: surviving the storm and surviving the aftermath/recovery. Because of all of the previous demand and widespread impact, initial recovery will be slow. Living in a disaster area is not for the faint of heart even if you are prepared for it. (Even if you can hack it, can you be of use or are you simply more weight?) If you are not prepared or can't help, forget it -- prepare to bailout as soon as you can after the storm (chainsaw). No use suffering for a week or two and then having to leave.
 
I don't understand the people that want to move to Florida. The heat and humidity and almost every year losing everything with Hurricane risk. To me that's just dumb. I had a friend die in a hurricane a few years ago. He was from Jersey

I've been here 30 years and haven't ever lost a thing to a hurricane.

I've lost more in ice/snow storms up north.

There are challenges everywhere.

You pays your nickel, you takes your chances.

It can't be compared to NOLA. NOLA is below sea level with levies. When the levies were overrun, there was no where for the water to drain. Things can get bad, but aren't anywhere close to likely to get Katrina bad.

We are in Largo, FL in Pinellas County less than 1 mile from The Crooked Cue. I am in zone D (not an evacuation zone) and opted to stay put. Helene saw record storm surge (2' over the previous records) the the beach communities are a war zone. They are calling for double that this go around and that war zone is about to completely wiped away. We are talking about miles and miles and miles of Florida coastline.

Stay safe there in Largo. I opted to evacuate St. Pete to Lake County on Monday night.
