Biggest lies in pool stories

My favorite story came from a man from my father’s generation…Micky Bell.
A guy asked him to play rotation for five bucks….he broke and made every ball….the guy quit and paid him…he gave the owner a quarter for table time and went out for a coffee…..came back to the pool hall half hour later and the owner sez he owed him more table time….
….Mickey sez “ I paid you for that game.” Owner sez “ Yeah but the cue ball is still going around the table…and we can’t catch it!”

Ours was $16. Those poor out of district fellas had to pay a whopping $26.

That line did pay my bills for a couple years once upon a time. I said once as I needed something new to say. The “I ain’t played in xxx months”’was wore out.

This was back in the 80’s.

So when I told a guy I was a beginner (I was a B+ player at the time) and he fell for it, ok cool I made an easy game that time.

Since it worked once, I tried it again, it worked again. And again and everywhere I went it seemed to work. Even when I got a bit older it still worked.

Put it this way if pool action was still a thing and I was out there, I wouldn’t share it here. I never told anyone that line-unless I was using on them. It got me more soft action (more weight, weaker guys willing to play) it just made the guy I was playing feel good about himself. Bingo! Hustlin 101

"Can't believe I missed that shot" includes the people that smash sticks or act out too. They are trying to convince others, maybe themselves too, that they are better than they are. I used to holler and yell, shake sticks angrily, all deliberate fake copying the people that did stupid things for real. Helped sell the "misses" and poor position.

Also endorsed the better lucky than good thing. Making our own luck was and is the ticket. Always great for people to think you are lucky!

After the exhibitions, my dad had the challenge match. 20 dollars if you could win. 8 ball, big table, Brunswick of course, he used a corn broom and the challenger could use what they wanted. 20 dollars was big money back then. You had to buy a challenge ticket for a dollar tho. 😂 Dad said he never paid out that twenty in all the years he did exhibitions.

Great story! Can we get you to squeeze out a few more about you or your dad?

Speaking of challenge matches, after Katrina Mike Massey and Spitball Charlie did a couple exhibitions to help victims. They also did challenge games, eightball on an eight foot table. Mike would break and run out one side of the balls. Always hooked himself on the eight ball though. I saw the pattern first game, confirmed it second game. Funny thing, some young guns never saw it. That was right after Katrina so it has been awhile but Mike could dab them a little. In a bit over two hours I saw him really miss twice.

Still might be that guy who used to attend DCC and other major tourneys continually looking for action insisting that he has a cock that hangs below his knees. Sure he'd get beat up some but a fair amount of people did pay up. :p

I never get in those kind of bets but changing philosophies had more to do with the end of Titanic Thompson and people like him than their own behavior. Generally speaking, people don't pay off a bet when they are outsmarted. If people had to admit they lost a bet they used to pay off even if they were tricked.
Peoples' ideas of what is behaving honorably have changed a lot in the last fifty years. I'm not sure if that is good or bad. A lot of the ability of those without honor to take from those with honor is gone. However it seems mainly because more of us are willing to wallow in the mud with those without honor than once existed.

I’ve made a lot of bets on a lot of different things…..but I’m not into paying or collecting where semantics is a factor.

Yeah, I like to see somebody really able to do something. Ti could do a lot, but he also relied on trickery a lot and was a top card mechanic. He was a monster with paper cards, plastic took a lot of his edge away.

I remember betting on stupid stuff when we were kids. "I can jump higher than the school house!" That's an easy one, school houses can't jump. I can't remember a couple bets that did make me a little money all through jr high and high school. I flipped nickels daily with a classmate in tenth grade biology. Dummy brought a bunch of acid to school one day, never saw him again. Bad timing, I was up a few dollars!

I was a country boy and didn't start gambling until we moved to the big city and I started third grade. Went to Catholic school then and the penguins were a bad influence. We had daily raffles for cakes or cupcakes, almost anything a parent would donate. They let us gamble dropping marbles, top wars, paper football, pretty much anything that didn't make us bloody! I was very good dropping marbles, just thought about it, kinda relates to pool. By the time I left Catholic school in the fifth grade I was a hardened gambler and disappointed when the public school wouldn't let us openly gamble!

People talk about gambling through college but how many gambled through third and fourth grade? Noncatholics that is, I think all of us Catholics did!

Truth is stranger than fiction.

I've beaten two Mosconi Cup players several times each. Just don't ask me how many times I've lost to them.

I'm also undefeated against Leonardo Andam. Beat that stiff 5-3 in the first round of a local weekly tournament that he dropped in on, and then quit while I was ahead.

In the old Brass Rail in Durham, NC, there was a local sweater named Wayne Dixon who used to ask every road player if he wanted to gamble.

When the road player said, "Maybe. What's the bet, and for how much?" Wayne would reply "I'll bet you a hundred dollars that my d**k is littler than yours."

I don't think that anyone ever took him up on it.
