Private Tournament at Home ?

I don’t play in a league, I don’t play in tournaments as of now. However, I wanted to get my Fargo established. I got my initial rating by emailing Fargo and they set it. Then I just play Rated players from my pool room in Salotto and report my games. I have 110 games in the system now by doing this.

I have even hosted games at my house with a few buddies.
Would you explain how that email conversation went? I didn’t think it was possible for anyone assigning themselves a starter rating, if that is what you did.

How did you go around looking out for those events or hosting/starting 1 ?
Go to the room a few times so they know you. Then ask the houseman/owner if you could host a small tournament. If yes, print out flyers and put them in the room. Advertise on their FB page. Depending on their business model, they’ll either want a few bucks for table time per player, or give the time for free.

If they say no, then you’ll have to become friends with a small group to invite, and just rent tables normally and have your tournament on them.

If all you want is more robustness, Salotto is the quickest way to get there, and you only need to find one person to play, not 8 for a tournament.

This is not a thing.

I have been invited to private games but nothing as a tournament.
How is it “not a thing” not trying to be an ass but that’s a pretty assumptive statement.
I only say this as I’ve both been invited and played in numerous “private tournaments” at both public places and personal homes and venues.

Sure. I emailed support@fargorate.com

Asked for a profile. They created it and gave me a starter rating of 498. The following was the response email. Then I upgraded my account and got Salatto hooked up.

“A profile has been created for you in FargoRate. This doesn't mean that you will have a rating of any type yet as you will need to get games in the system to be on your way to that. Your name will appear in the player search after our daily update. This happens overnight and completes mid-day.
You can get games in FargoRate by playing in leagues that use FargoRate LMS, play in tournaments that have the results go in FargoRate or by play one on one matches versus other players in FargoRate using the Salotto app.

Are you sure you have a "starter rating"? If you have a 0 here in the box, you do not. If you have 498 in the box, how did they give you that? Did you say you play like xyz and they said that is close to 498?

I don’t know what they did but when my profile was created, I logged into the app and it said 498. The guy who set it up is Bryan @ Fargo. I am sure he would be able to shed more light but this is my experience.

All I said in my request was, I would like to get a profile, gave them my demographic information and that I would be playing on Salotto. It was literally a one sentence email.

Yeah, I don't think you have a starter rating. If you download the phone app (it's free) it will show you if there is a zero there or a number, like my screenshot. The website doesn't list the starter rating if you have one. You must go to the phone app.

Well I am telling you it said 498 in the phone app. I have no reason at all to tell you a story. That was my experience and if it was a mistake on Fargos part when setting up my account, I can’t tell you.

Look up your name in the search, as if you were looking up another player. When it pops up, it will have the "Starter Rating" row with a number.

IDK if you can see it anywhere else. Once you get to 200 robustness, it disappears entirely (the field is not even there).

Gotcha!!!!!

The screenshot I posted, it did have 498 where it is now 442 but I see when I search as instructed, indeed a starter rating is 0. It is a little counterintuitive but thanks for the clarification!

Yeah, it's a bit confusing. I think when a player has no "starter rating" and zero robustness, a random number might appear as their "preliminary rating". In your case, it was 498, and you thought that was the "starter rating".

Also notice when you looked up your name, it should say 442P, instead of 442. The P stands for preliminary. It will go away when you have 200 games.

IDK why the user interface is not very consistent...

When I open up Solotto, I dont see any events listed. Do I have to subscribe in order to see ?

No, there won't be any. (or extremely few). It's basically meant for you and your buddy to create a match and play it. That way both of your scores go into FargoRate. (costs $3 for whichever player initiates the match on their phone, free for the other player).

I've posted on my local FB pool groups before that I wanted a Salotto match with "new to me opponents" and have gotten a few hits that way. If you do do that, be prepared for railbirds saying it's garbage and for sandbaggers.

I also use it a bit for long time friends, as a way to keep score between us, and have ammunition for one of us claims he is the best in the group.

There will probably a few like-minded players in the pool hall that want to do similar to you, and would be willing to keep score using it. Most will say no.

My Fargo touched 630 for a week. It hung in 620-25 range a couple of years. That was when I played as a Master in the BCAPL. As a Master, I won only one match....it was vs a Grand Master. 🤷‍♂️
Ooops enough with the credits. 😉
I trained with different levels of competition. A group of starter players can push each other.
Competition with stronger players can expedite the growth.
The White Spot in Fife was my 9 ball academy.
I had a B tournament the same night of the week 🤷‍♂️ Once I had dominated it I started the academy. It took a year and half to win A Beer for 7/8 finish.
My study time provided many new guys. Some were real Players. Others uh home table skills but no Competition experience. Shrug
It all starts with Basic. 🤷‍♂️ The light weight Competition gives a chance to think about the form while playing. In real competition it about the focus. In competition if interrupted I wouldn't be able to remember my name. I would have had Full Focus on the feel. The Ring Finger makes the call......Oops that's all. 🤷‍♂️ wink 😉
