SVB shouldn’t be allowed to turn hearing aids off?

I really don’t understand the argument, even if it’s an advantage for sake of argument, you’re going to say that person born with a hearing impediment must be able to hear in order to play? WTF

Let’s see where this goes:

Anyone born with better than 20/20 vision must wear blurry classes to bring their vision down to a “normal” level.

I heard the interview. The way it sounded to me, Fedor was implying that SVB’s ability to block out the noise made him less susceptible to high pressure when crowds are large and loud. It also allows him to filter out distractions.

That is clearly an advantage for Shane. How much? Impossible to say. We also don’t know if there are any disadvantages. Maybe other players, like Fedor, feed off the crowd more.

In any case, I think it is a legitimate point. Shane is choosing not to hear everything around him that the other players have to hear.

I don’t favor a rule just for Shane, though. My preference would be to leave things as is. It’s not like there a bunch of other players like him.

Anyone that’s ADD must pass a test in order to play because they have an unfair advantage to block out anything that’s a distraction.
 
When is it loud at a tournament? It's like playing in church and that's exactly why pool will never be popular to watch

I hate to say it, because I don’t mind hanging out in a good pool hall, but damn if it isn’t the only place where a loser will cry about losing to a handicapped opponent and then claim the deck was stacked against them.

The truth is, everyone’s got obstacles - some more visible than others - excuses are everywhere if you’re looking for one and cry babies will alway cry. Joe nailed it when he said, “life deals you lemons and you make lemonade.”

Lol brother it's just the opposite. ADD is an absolute nightmare for maintaining focus and playing pool. 😱 See something out of the corner of your eye? Hear something? The air has a bit too much movement to it? Oh look, a squirrel! Yeah... sometimes I think I'd play better with a lobotomy.

I could get medicated but I'd rather raw dog reality. The key to focus is to absolutely not really focus on anything. It's tough when you focus on 10 things at once all the time. You just gotta get absolutely zooted into laser focus mode and hope nobody drops their cue 50 feet away, or the opponent didn't leave his chalk in an inopportune spot.

It burns a lot of mental energy to force it. Sometimes you get in the zone and the whole world disappears. That's what makes pool worth it.

I refuse to play with headphones... not that they don't help me focus, they absolutely do, but it feels like a crutch and I personally don't like that. I have no qualms if anyone else uses headphones but I do believe they are a crutch for everyone.

Yeah you’re probably right about that but some people with ADD are able to intense hyperfocus (is that a word) when the game or something they like engages them.

My bigger point is that there’s nothing honorable about crying that someone else’s handicap turns out to be their advantage.

The real champions figure out a way to get into the zone more than most and being in the zone doesn’t guarantee a win either. Plenty of players look for shortcuts: headphones, earplugs, booze, drugs. But at the end of the day, the ones that get there are the ones who deal with the distractions and still find a way to perform.

If Shane’s deafness is a distraction for others it’s just an excuse. Like I said earlier if you looking for an excuse they are everywhere - they’re easier to find than finding the zone.
 
One pool hall I played in had the music so loud I would play with shooting muffs on............

It takes a little while to get used to not hearing certain sounds in the hit.........

If I play with headphones I can listen to what I want to listen to. I'll quit and leave if country is playing.

Why should I have to suffer because somebody wants to listen to that crap?

I completely disagree, SVB should be allowed to play in his natural physical state. I found that statement rather insulting to SVB Niel’s is blind in one eye, maybe he should be forced to have a mechanical device that makes his other eye work, or someone who is missing a finger should be forced to have a prosthetic on whilst playing.

I think the statement was rude and I’m also not convinced « normal hearing players « would play better in complete silence, If I play with complete noise cancelling earbuds, I hate not being able to hear the noise feedback from the balls. Either way I think his statement was wrong, going to an even more extreme example, if a guy had a back deformity that keeps him in the perfect pool position would we force him to do something about it?

Whiney butts will find something to cry about.
The hearing aids just provide something to cry about. Ooops that gives me a flashback to my childhood and Mother saying, ^I will give you something to cry about!"
With current technology I can listen to music or could have a coach give input through my hearing aids. None would be the wiser. With my phone in my pocket I can take a call just by pressing a button on the hearing aid. I can go to youtube and find my favorite pool playing music and drown out the background bar room shark attempts.
So what's it going to be? Forced wearing of the devices or forced removal? Cry Babies gonna Cry. Maybe they should outlaw aiming too. 🤷‍♂️ 😉

I hope fred-or's comments were in jest. He could make himself deaf too. That's an option.

Why would SVB turn off his hearing aids during tournament play, when it’s necessary to be alert?
